To Use OpenDeploy or Not?
phd
Hello All,
I have a question about OpenDeploy. Currently we have a script which deploys content from one server to another. The deployment is based on file comparison & deploys only incremental changes.
Currently the size of the source is 5 gigs in 5000 directories containing 35000 files. So each time the deployment script take around 35 minutes to check for changes and then deploys the changes.
On the other hand, I did a comparison with a copy utility, which does almost the same thing as OpenDeploy and it took less than 3 minutes to compare & deploy difference.
Am I missing or doing something wrong here. Has anybody experienced such a behavior and what has been doing to make it better.
Regards
Pawan Desai

Are you doing a transactional or non-transactional deployment with OpenDeploy?
I believe that transactional deployments will take longer than non-transactional deployments (and require more space).
Do you have reporting enabled on either (or both) servers in the OpenDeploy setup? Reporting adds significant overhead to the overall time it takes to perform the deployment. Try making sure that reporting is *disabled* on both servers, restart the servers, and try the deployment again - you should notice a dramatic improvement in overall time ... at the expense of not being able to use the reporting feature of OpenDeploy. (Features are not always free from overhead)

Also, are you executing any DeployNRun scripts in your OD deployment script?

Do you have reporting enabled on the Base Server and/or the Receiver?

I have disabled reporting on both the base & receiver by modifying the odbase.xml & odrcvr.xml and restarted the services.
There is still no improvement. The deployment ran for 32 minutes.

You might try opening a case with Support. Not sure what they'll be able to do for you - but they might be able to help diagnose the issue a bit more to see if the discrepancy in time can be explained (if not resolved).

Could you post your OD configuration? It would make it easier than asking questions back and forth.
Is it just the one deployment you've described or all deployments? Have you tried it with any other OD deployment configurations possibly to other receivers?
Also, when you disabled reporting, did you see a noticeable difference in the size of any of the log files generated? Speaking of logs, have you cleaned up your OpenDeploy log files, ensuring it's not the available space in the od-home\logs folder that's contributing to the long processing time? I know we had rather large log files that would fill up our server and would not allow us to do any deployments until we removed/archived them off the box.

Are you deploying from /.iwmnt or /iwmnt? If you are deploying from /.iwmnt deployments will take a longer time to run. Please post the OD config file.
