Merge Excel Files

I have a group of users who want to version Excel files within TeamSite (6.1 on Wintel) The Visual Diff tool works really well, but the Conflict Merge tool only displays raw text. Is there any way to make the Conflict Merge tool act like Visual Diff and handle Excel files better?

I am not aware of any way to extend the merge tool.

It's generally better to avoid the conflict in the first place, if possible. Curious why and how frequently you have conflicts?
