how to sync DCR field and ext property TS6.1

I have a field ID that needs to be present both within a DCR and within the extended properties for that DCR. Sometimes value is present in Extended Properties and not within the DCR, and sometimes the opposite is the case.

I need a callout or formapi function that will synchronize these ID fields when the DCR is opened for editing. Currently we have the callout that obtains unique ID from a database.

How do you suggest I should attack this problem?

Perhaps use FormAPI to make a call to a server-side CGI when the Save event occurs - it could pass, as a parameter, the value of the field within the DCR and the CGI could then either update the EA based on the value passed in, or call a FormAPI function to update the DCR field with the value found in the EA.

You'd need to decide what to do if both values are set but different - does the DCR override the EA or the other way around?

The values should never be different. Ideally my current callout that populates the DCR ID field should be updated to check if there is an EA, if there is not then get the new id from database, but if EA is present, then get the ID value from EA. Is there a way to pick up the EA from the ipl callout script?

One way is to run iwextattr CLT on your DCR from your callout script to read the EAs.
Read documentation on CLTs in CLT guide.
Read documentation on callouts in Templating Developers Guide.
I assume you are familiar with Perl.

From an inline script, you won't be able to do this because the inline is not passed any information about the DCR that is being opened. You would need to use a FormAPI callServer on load of your template to make the call.
