Tomcat´s encoding problem
mangetak
Hello,
We are developing an external aplication with Content Services, integrated in IW to extend it´s functionality. We are having a problem with accents and special caracters as spanish "ñ". The aplication is displaying several controls as textareas, text fields, combos… User insert text on it and afterwards data is saved in database.
The problem comes when trying to save. Strings with accents are not properly saved in database nor displayed correcty in navigator, being cut off to the first occurrence of a word with an accent.
Example:
User introduces this:
"Junto a estos aspectos, la investigación, política industrial, transportes "
Aplication shows up this (which is what it actually what is sent to database):
"Junto a estos aspectos, la investigaci"
We thought it could be database encoding configuration but dismissed it as other applications using the same database are working correctly. This fact takes us to think that the problem lies in the Tomcat serving our web application.
We would like to know how could we check encoding being used in the Tomcat installed with IW and wether it´s possible to change any configuration, and if so, how to do it.
We are using IW 6.1.
Any one has faced this problem before?
Thanks in advance

Hi,
Are you using Content Services SDK with SOAP or are you doing these operations via the TeamSite GUI? The reason I ask is because you mentioned Tomcat. If you are using ContenServices SDK using SOAP, Tomcat has nothing to do with it.

I do hope you're not trying to use TeamSite's Tomcat server to render your web pages -- that's a no-no.

We are developing within TeamSite GUI , so we are using Interwoven´s tomcat to render our web pages with no problem but the accents one.
We are not using SOAP.

Why is that a no no? If you create a custom portlet or jsp page that is exactly what you are doing. Using the Teamsite Tomcat server to render your custom code/page.

I think he's referring to using the tomcat installation to host a stand alone custom application, rather than extending the TeamSite UI.
That would be a bad idea, in the same light that it is a bad idea to use the tomcat/apache installation to virtualize your custom website.

Ahh... I saw the word integrated in the initial post. I assumed they were just adding a custom portlet/tab....
Sorry to over react.

(from recollection - may contain some inaccuracies)
Last I looked, the tomcat server that comes with TeamSite supported JSP1.1 as opposed to 1.2 - and 1.1 didn't do handle inclusions of HTML in UTF-8 whereas 1.2 did.
If your JSP is including an HTML file to present it - and that HTML file includes things like and/or UTF-8 characters like copyright symbols - then you will likely see odd-characters in the page as rendered by the tomcat server that ships with TeamSite.

You are right Jonny, We are integrating our application with TeamSite GUI adding not a tab,but a botton that calls a servlet. Our aplication consists in several JSP that access Content Services.
We are using the approach described in Interwoven´s UICG.pdf document, uploading our aplication to /iw-home/local/config/lib/content_center/customer_src folder and rebuilding it all again with the command:
iw-home/iw-perl/bin/iwperl iw-home/install/install_webapps.ipl -i -f
Any clue?
