Parrallel Tasks
suzanner
Hello all,
Quick question - how difficult is it to develop a workflow that has parallel tasks in it?? For example we need a workflow to be built that requires two reviewers, ideally reviewing in parallel.
Our IS team have blown as gasket about this one ... wondering if anyone could let me know how complex this really is??
Thanks
Suzanne

Have you looked through IWHOME/local/config/wft/examples/concurrent_approval.wft ?
Have you downloaded and read through the Workflow Tutorial Supplement (it's available on this site - search for it)

The answer to your question is "it depends".
If your IS Team has never written a workflow for TeamSite before, then their blowing a gasket is a valid reaction, because they are faced with a steep learning curve before they can write a simple workflow or make simple modifications to an existing workflow.
If your IS Team is experienced with TeamSite workflows, then setting up parallel review tasks shouldn't be a big deal.

Writing a workflow with parallel tasks isn't fundamentally much harder that writing one that's completely sequential. The only added complexity with parallel tasks is deciding what conditions are required to trigger subsequent tasks. For instance in a case where you've got multiple reviewers all looking at the content at the same time, you probably want a reject from any one of them to trigger the task to have the author rework it, but you don't want to move forward on the approval path until it's been approved by all of the reviewers.
You probably also want those parallel tasks to be read-only tasks, so you don't have problems with file locks.

It's about as easy as it gets. ****, you could probably even use Workflow Builder to do that one. Clearly you need training and a little time spent with some documentation. If Ghoti's document explains it at all, it has to be better than sitting down with the WF Developer's Guide, a document that's greatest use would be for kindling.
