License Problem TeamSite 5.5.2

Hi

I have recently installed TeamSite 5.5.2 on Windows 2000 SP4. I generated a license for the same using the hostMacid and other details in the tslicinfo.log

even after entering the valid license key the teamsite says the license invalid.. i noticed one thing whenever i restart the machine the value of the first four characters of the hostMACid changes ... is this id different than the physical address.. as when i run ipconfig /all i can see a diff. physical add. that remains static....

You're right in that you should take the value of the Physical Address, with the dashes removed.

Are you saying that when you restart your machine, the actaul MAC id changes??? ... or does it change in iw.cfg?

It does not change the physical address but it changes the hostMACid as mentioned in the tslicinfo.log

Because of this iwserver doesn't start... as we generated the license using the hostMACid in the log which keep on changing ..

also can you tell me what is this hostMACid and how it is related with the physical address... how teamsite writes this value to the log

The hostMACid and the physical address are one and the same. It's basically the "unique" identifier for your network adapter (the only reason I put that in quotes is that there are numerous ways to spoof and MACid).

I'm wondering -- when you generated the license, did you include the dashes or no? It's too bad the license generator page does not mention it, but you should NOT have dashes in the MAC id field when generating a license -- although, there is not enough spaces allocated for that form field when including the dashes, anyway.

The value of my physical address is different than what is mentioned in the tslicinfo.log

and the license key was generated using the value that is in the tslicinfo.log which is without dashes and the first four characters keeps on changing whenever i reboot the machine. eg: 1st boot macid 828420524153 2nd boot mac id cc0820524153... in both the boot the physical address remains the same as retrieved using ipconfig /all
can you suggest what possibly could be wrong.

I've no idea why the first four characters should by changing like that. It makes no sense. The first few digits of a MAC address (don't remember exactly how many) are supposed to represent the manufacturer of the NIC. The remainder are a "sequence number" generated and maintained by the NIC manufacturer. For the manufacturer portion to change like that seems very bizzare. It sounds like a bug in the logic to read the MAC, but I've no idea why.

If it cycles through a list of possible values, and then "loops back" and starts over again, you could use the multi-NIC license generator to generate a license for each possible value of the NIC. That of course won't work if there isn't a pattern to the values used. After all, there are 65536 possible values for those four digits.

The multi-nic license generator only allows you to list 4 NICs, but it's been my experience that you can actually have more in iw.cfg. I think at one point I had twelve active licenses for various combinations of domains and NIC cards that I encountered with my laptop.

Is it only these two values, then? If so, you can generate a license for multiple NIC's, assuming you only ever see the two.

Do you, in fact, have more than one network card or is there something screwy with your hardware?

every time i reboot i get a new number... can you tell me why this is happ. in your case does this id matches with the physical address

also how do i check whether my machine has a mutiple network card

Honestly, I have no idea why this is happening -- I'm not up on viruses but that could possibly be the issue. I'm afraid that's more likely than faulty hardware. Seriously, this shouldn't be happening. Your next line of contact should be the support desk for your network card's manufacturer. Sometimes, they take the blame :-)

You would know if you have multiple NIC's if you see multiple sets of entries when you do an "ipconfig /all", as you've done. For instance, my laptop at home appears to have two NIC's -- one for the built-in ethernet adapter and one for my wireless card. If I were to use both at once, each would give me a different IP address.

thanks for your replies... can you once confirm that the value of the physical address that is shown using ipconfig /all matches exactly what is there in the tslicinfo.log in your case.

i.e. if ipconfig /all returns you "abc" the same value "abc" is in the tslicinfo.log

You also have to be cognizant of loopback adapters (for 127.0.0.1) - I recall that a long time ago there were problems when machines with loopback adapters booted sometimes the order in which the adapters were initialized / responded varied and that played havoc with the license key verification. I don't remember what was done to resolve that anymore - haven't seen the problem in over 2 years (possibly 3).
