Kicking off a workflow through an external script

sabih

I need to start a workflow from a perl script. However nothing seems to be working and the command is not returning anything. The script call is below:
Custom script:
my $wf_cmd = "$IWHOME\\bin\\iwwft_compile.ipl -i < wftinput.xml";
$Logger->writeMessage("\$wf_cmd =\n \t$wf_cmd");
my $myCmd = `$wf_cmd`;
$Logger->writeMessage("return of \$myCmd = $myCmd"); (RETURNS NOTHING)

"wftinput.xml" file has the following data&colon;
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" ?>
<iwwft_compile_params>
<param name="iw_template_file">
<value>ICT/ExpireContent.wft</value>
</param>
<param name="iw_author">
<value>salam</value>
</param>
<param name="iw_user">
<value>salam</value>
</param>
<param name="iw_workarea">
<value>/ICT/main/Allstate_Marketing/WORKAREA/Interactive_Marketing</value>
</param>
<param name="iw_file">
<value>/templatedata/Categories_Products_Topics/Product_Article/data/sabtest</value>
<value>/templatedata/Categories_Products_Topics/Product_Article/data/sabtest3</value>
</param>
</iwwft_compile_params>

If there's a problem, it's probably going to stderr, which execution backticks don't catch. Try redirecting stderr to stdout in your command ( 2>&1 ) and see if you get any output when you run it then.

Also, does it run when you run iwwft_compile.ipl directly, rather than through a script?

This worked for us:

my $cmd = "|C:/iw-home/iw-perl/bin/iwperl c:/iw-home/bin/iwwft_compile.ipl -i 2>&1>$logfile";
$cmd =~ s|/|\\|g; #To get windows slash

Hope this helps. FYI- Windows 2000 TS 6.1.

I am actually trying to run the script as CGI since I don't have access to command line. Will this command still work?

you shouldn't need to convert the '/'s to '\\'s - '/' will work fine on all systems.

Is your custom cgi being run via iw_cgi_wrapper.cgi ? (i.e. /iw-bin/iw_cgi_wrapper.cgi/yourcgiscript.cgi)
If not - try doing that.
I believe iwwft_compile.ipl may require that the user executing the command be able to login as Master [like iwjobc requires] (they don't have to be logged in as Master, they just need the ability to do so) though I haven't really played much with this CLT.

I'd second the suggestion that you attempt to catch errors using the 2>&1 redirect in your back-tick command line - and possibly check the various logfiles (especially the iwui/error_log) for help debugging the problem

I did have to run the perl script as master to get the iwjobc call(from the -i) to run.

I had a similar situation that I solved by replicating the "New Job" form (this is with TS 5.5.2) and filling in the hidden form fields and posting it. That will have the same effect as starting from the FILE menu except you can prefill whatever values you have.

All I am getting is the error code 1 i.e. Input parameter values invalid (see "Error handling" above). I am running the command like below.

my $wf_cmd = "$IWHOME\\bin\\iwwft_compile.ipl -i < '$IWHOME\\http\\iw-bin\\ICT\\wftinput.xml'";
$Logger->writeMessage("\$wf_cmd =\n \t$wf_cmd");
my $myCmd = `$wf_cmd 2>&1`;
$Logger->writeMessage("return of \$myCmd = $myCmd");
my $exit_val = $? >> 8;
$Logger->writeMessage("return of \$myCmd exit code = $exit_val");

The log file has the following output.
212: $wf_cmd =
d:\iw-home\bin\iwwft_compile.ipl -i < 'd:\iw-home\http\iw-bin\ICT\wftinput.xml'
214: return of $myCmd =
216: return of $myCmd exit code = 1

The file wftinput.xml is listed in my first post:

I believe Windows doesn't like parsing single-quotes in commands.
Try the following change and see if it helps:my $wf_cmd = qq($IWHOME\\bin\\iwwft_compile.ipl -i < "$IWHOME\\http\\iw-bin\\ICT\\wftinput.xml");

Still no luck. Could it be because I don't have master user privilage?

Adam Stoller

Have you tried running the command on the command line?
Perhaps there is some error diagnostics that you aren't seeing when the command is being run in your script (like perhaps that you need to be a master user)?

There was no output from running that. But there also wasn't a job created, so I'm assuming that I'm getting the same issue.

On windows you might want to try using this command

my $wf_cmd = qq($IWHOME\\iw-perl\\bin\\iwperl.exe $IWHOME\\bin\\iwwft_compile.ipl -i < "$IWHOME\\http\\iw-bin\\ICT\\wftinput.xml");

even if the iwperl location is in your path env variable.

Hope this helps
