TS Workflows in Java
nithinbose
Hi All,
A while ago there were some discussions on developing TeamSite (5.5.2) workflows in Java.
We are looking towards this option for ease of maintenance, as our team is more comfortable working with Java than Perl.
Any thoughts on this approach? Any sample workflows will be of great help.
Thanks in advance,
Nithin

I do not think that this is supported.
Workflow is an XML file with some perl code in it.

Thanks for the help.
We have currently implemented our workflows in Perl and XML. We were exploring options of replacing the Perl scripting with Java for our next major project for ease of maintenance.
Can I use some Java program, invoked from custom menu items to produce the Job XML required for the workflow and then create a new job out of it?

Yes. A workflow job spec is an XML document. You can produce one using any method or language you desire, and then ask the system to instantiate the job. The instantiation can be done using the iwjobc CLT, or with the ContentServices API. Of course you should be prepared to handle the possibility of an error during instantiation if the spec is not valid.

Thanks.
To not reinvent the wheel, can we in any way make use of the modules that parse the available_templates.cfg and then later invoke my Java engine to create the Job XML?
Thanks,

The file available_templates.cfg lists workflow templates, so it would not know about your "Java" workflows. You could write a "Perl" workflow template that is a simple wrapper for you Java workflow. Then you could take advantage of the current dispatching mechanism. If fact, you might want to use the Perl workflow template to gather and validate the user's inputs (the job instantiation form) and then use Java just for the generation of the job spec.

Java is pretty good at working with XML.

Have a stub .wft configured in available_templates.cfg that redirects to a JSP that invokes your API for constructing the job XML, then calls OpenAPI to instantiate that job.

Thanks all for your help.

Hi Nithin,
We are exactly in the same position you were in last year. Could you please tell us if you could do it? And what is the approach that you followed?
Thanks,
Mamatha.
