VisualAnnotate greys out options
System
Here's one for you smart folks... VA is installed, enabled, and I'm using it in a slightly-modified sample IW VA-enabled workflow.
When I attempt to edit a file that's attached to a VA-enabled workflow, I use the Smart Context Editor to select REVIEW and then my VA toolbar comes to life. Well, half-life. Every button but the "Review" button is disabled. When I select the Review button to list the options available, it reads "Unannotated page" with a checkmark next to it. Beneath that is a greyed comment that reads "No snapshot available."
Am I selecting the wrong type of file? Has anyone seen this problem before? It's probably something very basic, but I've read the worthless manual but more importantly, have read through DevNet about this.
Thanks,
Dave

When you click on the question mark, what message do you see? (e.g., "You are viewing an unannotated version of this file")
Does the toolbar detect that the user is logged into TeamSite? (i.e., My ContentCenter menu, does it say "Logged in as: USER"?) If so, is the user on the toolbar the same user to which the workflow task is assigned?

1. When I click on the question mark, it displays more tutorial-type stuff ("Getting Started", "Email VA Admin", etc.) but on the "Review" menu, it displays "You are viewing an unannotated version of this file" or something to that effect.
2. Yes, the ContentCenter menu displays the correct user information.
Thanks,
Dave

Uhh, I appreciate the suggestion there, Greg!

Actually, I tried it again this evening on a completely different instance of TS (see my signature -- I cover two). Same problem.
It's likely something I'm doing wrong, but I'm doing this with IW's solution workflows, etc. so I'm confident that I'm not the only one who has seen this problem.

well, it was a brief engagement with a client in another city, I saw it was greayed out, we fiddled with the toolbar, and suddenly it started working. Maybe it was just my bio-field.. I dunno..
sorry I could not be more helpful.. I can just suggest you fly me over

I'd rather fly over there -- I haven't been to AUS for 4 years, now. It was very nice... spent the second half of 2000 there.

Yep, the one Greg was talking about was ME!
I can tell you that it didnt just start working, its how you use it. In terms of the OOB workflow solutions, it is a bit fussy as to WHEN you can use it.
The way I got it to work? When I assigned the job I logged in to the Standard Interface.
I edit the file...review greys out within the browser...as you have described.
Once you get back out of the file, then you can click on File, Review and now you can do it..
Dont ask me why, but that seems to be the answer, I put it down to my lack of understanding on what a 'review cycle' is

Nope, no luck at all. I used the method you outlined below, but nothing. Everything is still greyed out (see attachment).

Dave,
Can you reproduce this problem on a different client machine? Have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling the toolbar? It seems like it may be a client issue, and that's why the toolbar isn't working on any of the TS servers you hit. Most of these strange toolbar problems are solved by simply uninstalling the toolbar, removing the VisualAnnotate directory from C:/Program Files, and reinstalling it. The uninstall/install process takes less than a minute.
Also, make sure that you log into your TS server and access VA with the value of 'host' in the [iwwebd] section of iw.cfg. ( I noticed that you're hitting your server with
http://servername
, as opposed to
http://server.domain.com
.)

I just did that and at least I'm seeing different things now!
Okay, when I try to Review the content (which is in the Content Approval task of IW's canned configurable author assignment WF, by the way), it tells me that the file "is not part of a VisualAnnotate review process." The Reviews button, by the way, reads "Unannotated page" with a checkmark next to it.

Shot in the dark ... Do you have the Google toolbar on your browser? I know that at least at one point, in the early days of VA, the VA toolbar and Google toolbar didn't play well together. If you do have the Google toolbar (or some other "extra" toolbar) in your browser, try turning them off and see if VA starts working better.
Like I said, this is a shot-in-the-dark. I haven't used VA and this could be something completely off-base, but I figured it was worth mentioning...

No, that's a good point. Fortunately or unfortunately, I do not use the Google toolbar -- so, that's not my issue.
Thanks, though!
