contents of child dcrs not coming up

apsmiles

Hi all,
I am facing a weired problem. I have one directory (say htmls ) parallel to templatedata folder in a WORKAREA ( Devlp). I am generating all html files into the htmls directory. The only different thing is, I am doing all this in another workarea ( Prod ). I am copying (using iwupdate -x) from Dev to Prod workarea only the required dcrs. Then from a script i am generating html files in htmls of Prod workarea by providing absolute paths ( from /default/main/.../Prod/templatedata/cat/data/xyz.dcr etc).
The first error I am facing is ERROR : 00920, which after searching a few of the responses by Mr Ghoti, I came to know that is due to locks. Anyhow, this doesnot stop the html files to be generated in htmls of Prod workarea.
The second and very strange error I am facing is that I am not able to see the contents of the "dcrs attatched inside dcrs" OR "the child dcrs". I would like to mention here that I can see them at right place in Prod workarea. I am able to see their contents ( both the parents' as wells the child's). Even if I try to preview the parent dcr from UI, I am not able to see the contents of the child dcr on the temporarily generated html.
Can somebody help me in figuring out why is this happening and what I can do to avoid it.
Just FYI: I am using TS 6.5 on solaris box.
Thanks in advance

I'm not sure I understand the scenario nor the problem.
What I believe you are saying is you have:

/default/main/****/WORKAREA/Devlp/htmls/html_files.html
/default/main/****/WORKAREA/Devlp/templatedata/cat/dtype/data/dcr_file.dcr
/default/main/****/WORKAREA/Prod/htmls/html_files.html
/default/main/****/WORKAREA/Prod/templatedata/cat/dtype/data/dcr_file.dcr

(right so far?)

Next, you say you are doing the development in the Devlp workarea and then copying the [approved] DCRs from there to the Prod workarea (right?)

Then you are using a script to [re]generate the HTML files from the DCRs in Prod (right?)

Now things start to get fuzzy for me. You start talking about "dcrs attached inside dcrs" and parent and child DCRs and not seeing contents or preview not working or something.

Can you try to clarify what's going on here?
Perhaps provide the actual commands used to generate the files and/or what steps you are going through to try and see the contents?

You perfectly understand the scenario. And by "child dcrs" or"dcrs inside dcrs" I am talking about those dcrs which were attached to the main dcr while creating it. For example, I have 4 dcrs namely india.dcr, china.dcr, singapore.dcr, japan.dcr. And I have another dcr named asia.dcr. Now this asia.dcr is calling the other 4 dcrs to present some data in the tpl. All the 5 dcrs are in the same workarea, but can be different categories/contents.
Then in my script is using iwupdate -x something like this..
$cmd = $binDir.'iwupdate -w '.$sourcePath.' '.$destPath;
#Execute command
executeCommand($cmd);
then iwgen something like this:
$cmd = $binDir.'iwgen -t '.$tplPath.' -r '.$dcrPath.' '.$htmlFilePath ;
#Execute Command.
$cmdRes = executeCommand($cmd);
the executeCommand function looks like this:
sub executeCommand($) {
my $command = shift;
my $execRes;
my $output;
try
{
$output = `$command`;
`sleep 1`;
$execRes = 1;
$logger->debug("Command Run : $command");
$logger->debug("Command res : $!");
}
otherwise
{
$execRes = 0;
$logger->error("\n Couldnot run command: $command");
};
return ($execRes, $output);
}
One point I would like to mention here, inside the tpls, the dcrs existence is checked something like this
[blue.
my $prefix = iwpt_get_pt_name('dirname') ;
$prefix =~ /(.default.*WORKAREA.\w+)/;
$prefix=$1;
$prefix=~ s/\\/\//g; # Replace back slashes with forward slash
my $dcrPath = iwpt_dcr_value('dcr.rootElementAsia.country');
$checkDCR = $prefix.$dcrPath;
my $result = `$iwhome/iw-perl/bin/iwperl $iwhome/iw-perl/bin/chkPath.pl $checkDCR 2>&1`;
chomp($result);
if($result eq 'true')
{
$countryDCR = iwpt_load_dcr($dcrPath);
}

chkPath.pl is just checking if(-e $dcrPath) and returns true false accordingly.

Please let me know I can do something more to make myself more clear.
Thanks in advance

$cmd = $binDir.'iwupdate -w '.$sourcePath.' '.$destPath;
# Nit: it would be clearer written as:
$cmd = "$binDir/iwupdate -w $sourcePath $destPath";
# I'm assuming that neither source or dest paths have white-space - yes?
executeCommand($cmd);
# You don't seem to be checking return result here
$cmd = $binDir.'iwgen -t '.$tplPath.' -r '.$dcrPath.' '.$htmlFilePath ;
# Nit: Again, this would be clearer
$cmd = "$binDir/iwgen -t $tplPath -r $dcrPath $htmlFilePath";
# I again assume that none of the paths contain white-space - yes?
$cmdRes = executeCommand($cmd);
# I'm assuming that $cmd and $cmdRes are declared with 'my' somewhere - yes?
sub executeCommand($) {
my $command = shift;
my $execRes;
my $output;
# Where are 'try' and 'otherwise' coming from?
# They're not built-in functions/directives as far as I know - are they?
try
{
$output = `$command`;
# you might want to add 2>&1 before the closing back-tick
# to redirect STDERR into STDOUT into $output
`sleep 1`;
# use the built-in function 'sleep' instead, more efficient
$execRes = 1;
$logger->debug("Command Run : $command");
$logger->debug("Command res : $!");
# WRONG: Use $? for backtick commands
# and check it *immediately* after the command - so this would be:
$logger->debug("Command Run : $command");
$output = qx($command 2>&1);
$logger->debug("Command res : $?");
$execRes = 1;
sleep(1);
}
otherwise
{
$execRes = 0;
$logger->error("\n Couldnot run command: $command");
};
return ($execRes, $output);
# You are returning two values, but in one case
# you aren't checking any return values and in the other case
# you are only retrieving one return value - not good.
}
#One point I would like to mention here, inside the tpls, the dcrs existence is checked something like this
my $prefix = iwpt_get_pt_name('dirname') ;
$prefix =~ /(.default.*WORKAREA.\w+)/;
$prefix=$1;
$prefix=~ s/\\/\//g; # Replace back slashes with forward slash
my $dcrPath = iwpt_dcr_value('dcr.rootElementAsia.country');
# If you needed slash-substition, do it earlier and on both pieces of info
# also use 'tr' instead of 's' - more efficient - e.g.:
# (my $prefix = iwpt_get_pt_name('dirname')) =~ tr|\\|/|;
# (my $dcrPath = iwpt_dcr_value(...)) =~ tr|\\|/|;
# However, you're on Solaris - so you shouldn't need it at all.
# also test the match before resetting $prefix:
my $prefix = iwpt_get_pt_name('dirname');
if ($prefix =~ m|(/default/.*/WORKAREA/[^/]+)|){
$prefix = $1;
}
my $dcrPath = iwpt_dcr_value('dcr.rootElementAsia.country');

$checkDCR = $prefix.$dcrPath;
my $result = `$iwhome/iw-perl/bin/iwperl $iwhome/iw-perl/bin/chkPath.pl $checkDCR 2>&1`;
chomp($result);
if($result eq 'true')
{
$countryDCR = iwpt_load_dcr($dcrPath);
}
#chkPath.pl is just checking if(-e $dcrPath) and returns true false accordingly.
# Avoid making unnecessary calls to other programs - for efficiency
my $countryDRC = '';
if (-e "$prefix$dcrPath" && -r "$prefix$dcrPath"){
$countryDCR = iwpt_load_dcr($dcrPath);
}

Please let me know I can do something more to make myself more clear.

Well, I'd suggest making the changes described above, then, if the logfile doesn't make it clear what the problem is, show us the log file and describe in more detail the actual problem -- the code itself isn't "horrible" - but we don't know what is/is not happening and in what context (preview, generate, via standard menus or custom script, using iwgen or iwpt_compile.ipl, etc.)

Thank you very much Mr fish,
I'd definitely incorporate your suggestions as they perfectly make sense. I traced the bug, it was the $prefix variable, which was creating problem and was not passing proper workarea name.
But everything is working fine.
Thanks,
Anil
