Web CMS (TeamSite)
Directory Structure
System
Hi,
I have hundreds of thousands of documents (Knowledge Base articles) to be imported into Teamsite. There is no realistic classification to distribute articles in smaller groups. Article IDs (File name) are six digit unique numbers like 123456, 123457 etc. I can dump all articles under a single WA/Folder but that will be the worst structure and will be a nightmare from usage point of view as to locate an article the user has to scroll through thousands of articles. So I want to distribute articles into multiple folders. As mentioned earlier there is no further classification (like marketing, legal etc) available that can be used to distribute articles among various folders and thus reducing number of files under any folder to a reasonable one (may be 100s).
Can anybody throw some ideas on how best a folder structure should be created in similar situation so that navigating to a file become relatively fast!!
P.S. - Implementing Search is not an option here.
Thanks in advance.

If there's a date associated with each article - you could use 'yyyy', 'yyyymm' or 'yyyymmdd' style folders for organization.
If there are distinct authors for the articles - you could use the userid of the author (or firstname_lastname or lastname_firstname, or lastname_firstInitial, etc.) as a means of organizing sub-folders.

Thanks mch for the reply.
Unfortunately none of the criteria you mentioned applies to these article ids. Article number simply started with 000100 and then got incremented by 1 each time a new article had been created.
Thats why it is probably some what difficult to classify.
One idea is to create folders like 000, 001 etc. And under 000 store articles 000100 to 000999.
Similarly under 001 folder store articles 001000 to 001999.
and go on like that.
But I am not sure how efficient that structure will be. Thats why looking for some alternate ideas.
Thanks

If there aren't any logical classifications/groupings to use with the articles (surely there has to be a couple of similarly typed articles), and no date or author to use for a directory structure, could you simply group them by the article title? They must have a title, right? So you could have a alphabetical folder structure:
AaAr
AsBo
BpCh
...
However you want to break it down.
I would seriously think about some type of high-level classification though to develop a taxonomy. Without knowing what type of content the Knowledgebase articles cover, can't really provide any more ideas.
Maybe post a sample. Good luck!
