Using Colspan to Line Up Fields

I have a nested container with four textbox fields in it and I'm trying to align it with the other fields outside the container but I can't seem to get it to move. I'm developing the template in 5.5.2 and I'm using colspan="4" for the other items in the outer container that line up just fine. But for some reason the colspans aren't moving the fields inside my container. Anyone run into this and have a resolution? Thanks!
