Working with replicants

I have read quite a few posts on this subject, and I am still not getting it.

I have this piece of code:

ImageArray = IWDatacapture.getItem("/PhotosArray").getChildren();
alert (ImageArray);
var max = ImageArray.length;
alert(max);

The alert doesn't fire.

However, I change it to this:

ImageArray = IWDatacapture.getItem("/PhotosArray[ 1 ]").getChildren();
alert (ImageArray);
var max = ImageArray.length;
alert(max);

The first alert says [ object Object ] and the second says <b>1</b>.

I am trying to figure out why in the first example, the JS breaks.

the dcr looks like this:

    <item name="PhotosArray" colspan="100">
   <label>Photos</label>
   <replicant min="0" max="10">
   <item name="Photos" colspan="100">
    <label>Photos (if any)</label>
    <browser maxlength="400" size="72" extns=".jpg" 
      ceiling-dir="/images"/>
   </item>    
  </replicant>
   </item>

From what you wrote, it looks as though you're implementing the PhotosArray container as a replicant. In the first block, you're not able to read the "PhotosArray".getChildren() because it apparently doesn't exist -- the location is different than what you're referencing.

What are you trying to eventually do with the length of the child array, anyway?
