This is not possible. 1 task in a workflow must work in 1 area (unless its an updatetask). So, that would be why you are getting an error. It would seem that your workarea structure is not set up in the best manner. Workareas should just be "copies" of each other, with the only differences being work in progress. Setting them up the way it seems you have (radically differing items that need to be routed together) will cause you many issues, including the one you've just run into.

As Jonathon stated, a single task can only reference a single area. One way to get a job to process files in two different workareas would be to have additional tasks that deal with the additional area. However, any single task (such as Submit or Review) would probably only deal with one area at a time.

Don't think the addfile() will work, but what may work is if you use the command line tools for the commands. If you know the name of the file, then you may be able to run CLT's to perform some of the actions you are looking for.

You can't have files from 2 (or more) different areas associated with the same task - period.
You can, as Brinko indicated, fork the workflow - to have multiple transition streams in which each stream has it's own set of files associated with that stream's areavpath - but you would have to keep the two (or more) streams separate from that point on - unless you use an updatetask (or equivalent) to copy the files from the 2nd (and/or 3rd, etc.) streams into the areavpath of the 1st stream (* I'm using 1st and 2nd arbitrarily here - it doesn't matter which you use as long as all the files end up in one stream) - then you could submit them all together.
Alternatively, you can used nested workflows to run identical workflow processes for distinct areavpaths - again though, the parent workflow would not be able to act on all the files within a single task unless all those files had been copied into the same areavpath.
