Empty Branch

Ok this may be obvious but -
I'm using a Branch (with no Workarea and no files or content) just as a holder for a sub-branch.
Can I delete the STAGING an EDITIONS folders from this branch with no ill-effects to the functioning of the sub-branches. It would make things all lot tidier to get rid of all these STAGING and EDITION folders at each level that are never actually used.

Just to tidy things up. They're never used, and could potential confuse the user.

You can't delete or even modify STAGING, EDITIONS, etc.
I would suggest train your users.

I've done this without any negative ramifications to the environment. However, if you're concerned about the users being confused about the extra folders, why not set the permissions on these folders such that the users do not see them?

BTW, what version are you using?

When you say you can't do you mean there is a negative effect? Because I can physically delete them.

I could set the folder permissions, but if these folders are empty, server no purpose, and are never used, why keep them?

Oh and ahem, yes, I'm using 5.5.2 on W2K

From the file system, you can certainly delete them. You can't do that from the UI, however.

No problem -- even though you say you won't need them, change the permissions so that they're still readable/writable to the UI user (iwui if Unix, SYSTEM if Windows) and one or more "master" users. It's a bit of a headache to have to rebuild a branch later on and you should be able to retain all of the properties of an ordinary STAGING area, etc.

Cheers for the tip. One last question. I can't change the permissions, it say permission denied. Do I have to shut down the iwserver process? A freeze doesn't seem to help.

No, not at all. You can't change the permissions because the file system is controlled by TeamSite.

If you can't "fix" the permissions and you really don't want your users to see them, I think your only option now is to actually delete them.

I wonder if anyone else reading this can come up with something that hasn't been mentioned yet, though.

Thanks but same problem with the delete i.e I thought I could delete them but I actually can't.
Looks like I'll have to live with the mess, unless there's some other way to 'structure-up' brnaches without using branches.

Are you trying to do this from TS or from the operating system? I've been able to do this on 5.5.2... hmm, well you can also have users Set their "Home Page" so that they won't have to supernavigate every time down the long, dark path of branches, sub-branches, and workareas...

Tried from both Teamsite and the operating system, with no joy.
Alas Home Page doesn't really lick it either beacuse most of the users work in more than one of several branches. Thanks anyhoo :-)

A branch is defined as having a staging area, and editions area and zero-or-more workareas. Thus, by that definition you cannot delete a staging or edition area for a branch regardless of whether or not there are any workareas on it.

However - you might file a feature request to support your use-case such that in the GUI if one navigates into a branch with no workareas and only sub-branches that it would "hide" the STAGING and EDITION area from view.
