Replicants and functions

dchristie

T.S. 6.0, Solaris

Hello all! I have a general question about replicants and applying functions to the replicants. Can someone provide the basics for applying functions to replicants in the DCTs? I have some functions in my code that take the selections from a select box and do some concatenation and display the results in a text box. But I can’t seem to find any documentation on the code syntax for doing so. I’ve gone through past posts on DevNet but can’t seem to find the basics to point me in the right direction. Any help would be great. Thanks.

I'd need more specifics about what you're trying to do, but in general, you should have an init() function which contains a statement similar to the following:

IWEventRegistry.addItemHandler("/loc1/loc2/loc3","onItemChange", FUNCTION_NAME);

There are other events than onItemChange, but this is a common one. In this example, "/loc1/loc2/loc3" is the path to the item where you want this event to be fired. Any of all of loc1, loc2, or loc3 can be replicants. You do not need to specify a container item when registering an event -- this is the good part.

Then, in your function, this ITEM is passed in, so your function might look something like:

function changeThis(item) {
   if (item.getValue() == 'something') {
      -- do this --
   } else {
      -- do that --
   }
}

Does that answer your question?

Ok, let me see if I can make it clearer. I do have an init() function and we are doing a handler as well, similar to what you suggested. The problem for me is with applying these functions to replicants when the number of replicants will be dynamic. There could be 3 instances or 5 or so on, but how does the function handle the issue of the possibility of varying amounts? I'm assuming an array of some type needs to be used, perhaps in a variable in the handler line?

Migrateduser

No, the handler basically doesn't care about how many replicants there are. For instance, if you have an item whose path is "/p1/p2[7]/p3[2]/p4/p5[3]/p6" -- which I'm sure you'll agree is a needlessly long and complex path -- and you want to trigger an onItemChange event for every instance of item p6, all you'd need to do is declare the following line:

IWEventRegistry.addItemHandler("/p1/p2/p3/p4/p5/p6","onItemChange", doSomething);

... which looks great, don't you think? We don't care about replicants when we're registering an event. Just its basic path. So, this event will be triggered whenever any instance of p6 is changed.

Hmm, I see what you’re saying, but I must be missing something in my syntax. When you say the path is /p1/p2/p3/p4/p5/p6 , are you saying the path to the replicant group its self or is /p1/p2/p3/p4/p5/p6 representing 6 instances of your replicant that you are starting wtih, and then any more than that will have the same applied to it? Let me attach a slimmed down version of the datacapture that I'm dealing with.

The attached file has a "banners" container and an "other_products" container. The "other_products" container has the replicant. The reason I left the banners container is that it also uses the same functions, but just not in a replicant field. I use that as a gauge to see if I've broke anything when trying to get the replicants to work. In the handler section of the scripts at the bottom I have commented out the handlers for the replicant because it seems to break some of the functions in the “banners"

Migrateduser

I don't see anything commented out, but p6 is the item to trigger the event and p1-p5 are ancestors of p6. Another more relevant example would be "/other_products/product_group/image", for instance. Use this syntax when registering the event. Note the absence of replicant addresses.

Also, I think you're going to have other problems with your API. You're naming your functions "getValue" and "setValue" and it looks like they're calling existing Teamsite functions. But, I think it's going to look at the functions that you've written instead, so it would basically be called recursively. You may want to use a less generic name for these functions.

Oops, yeah, I put up the attachment without the commented out fields. I'll throw in the file with the fields commented out.

Well, I do see that I did have the addressing of the ancestors on the replicant wrong, but after correcting them it still doesn't seem to work. The getValue and setValue functions have been used for months now in other dcts so I don't think they are the problem. In this attachment I've corrected the addressing and have 3 lines commented out in the "init_link_to" function. When any of the commented lines are uncommented it will break the other functions that are working with the "banners".

Migrateduser

Okay, I think the setValue stuff just kind of jumped out at me.

Anyway, I think I know why those lines are breaking your code. When registering an event, you don't need to specify the replicant id, but when passing an item to a function, you do. So, for instance, you have:

 // prod_handle_link_to( IWDatacapture.getItem( parent + "/other_products/product_group/prod_link_to" ) );

which is still commented out, but I think if you were to replace it with something like:

for (var i=1;i<=IWDatacapture.getItem("/other_products/product_group").getChildren().length;i++) {
   prod_handle_link_to( IWDatacapture.getItem( parent + "/other_products/product_group[" + i + "]/prod_link_to"));
}

Like I said, I'm 90% sure about that, but if it doesn't work let me know. If it DOES work, then the other two commented lines would be similar.

Dave, that didn't seem to work. Did I put it in the wrong place? Here's exactly how I added it to the DCT:

var parent = '' ;
function init_link_to( parent )
{
IWEventRegistry.addItemHandler(parent + "/banners/lg_link_to", "onItemChange", lg_handle_link_to );
lg_handle_link_to( IWDatacapture.getItem( parent + "/banners/lg_link_to" ) );

IWEventRegistry.addItemHandler(parent + "/banners/sm_link_to", "onItemChange", sm_handle_link_to );
sm_handle_link_to( IWDatacapture.getItem( parent + "/banners/sm_link_to" ) );

IWEventRegistry.addItemHandler(parent + "/other_products/product_group/prod_link_to" , "onItemChange", prod_handle_link_to );

for (var i=1;i<=IWDatacapture.getItem("/other_products/product_group").getChildren().length;i++) { prod_handle_link_to( IWDatacapture.getItem( parent + "/other_products/product_group[" + i + "]/prod_link_to"));}

IWEventRegistry.addItemHandler(parent + "/banners/lg_content", "onItemChange", lg_handle_link_content );
IWEventRegistry.addItemHandler(parent + "/banners/sm_content", "onItemChange", sm_handle_link_content );
// IWEventRegistry.addItemHandler(parent + "/other_products/product_group/prod_content", "onItemChange", prod_handle_link_content );

IWEventRegistry.addItemHandler(parent + "/banners/lg_action", "onItemChange", lg_handle_link_action );
IWEventRegistry.addItemHandler(parent + "/banners/sm_action", "onItemChange", sm_handle_link_action );
// IWEventRegistry.addItemHandler(parent + "/other_products/product_group/prod_action", "onItemChange", prod_handle_link_action );

}

Do you see anything that I may of missed?
Thanks for all the help.

Migrateduser

Hmm, no -- everything looks fine to me, too. Try putting in alerts in many places to see exactly where it's bugging out.

Sorry, I need to amend that... try putting the alerts in prod_handle_link_to to see where the problem is. It may or may not be in the referencing of the item.

With the alerts in the function prod_handle_link_to I'm thinking it's bugging out when it gets to the addressing of the elements in the function. Does the addressing need to be simialr to the handle function with regards to the items in the function? Like the items I'm doing setVisible to and the like?

function prod_handle_link_to( item )
{
alert(item);
var index = item.getValue() ;
var options = item.getOptions() ;
var value = (options != null && index !=null) ? options[ index ].value : "none" ;
alert(value);
IWDatacapture.getItem( "/other_products/product_group/prod_area" ).setRequired( false ) ;
setVisible( "/other_products/product_group/prod_area" , false ) ;
setVisible( "/other_products/product_group/prod_action" , false ) ;
setVisible( "/other_products/product_group/prod_action_code" , false ) ;
setVisible( "/other_products/product_group/prod_content" , false ) ;
setVisible( "/other_products/product_group/prod_content_page" , false ) ;
setReadonly( "/other_products/product_group/prod_deep_link" , true ) ;

if( "Getaway" == value )
{
setVisible( "/other_products/product_group/prod_area" , true ) ;
handle_area( IWDatacapture.getItem( "/other_products/product_group/prod_area" ) ) ;
IWDatacapture.getItem( "/other_products/product_group/prod_area" ).setRequired( true ) ;
}
else if( "Action" == value )
{
setVisible( "/other_products/product_group/prod_action" , true ) ;

}
else if( "Content" == value )
{
setVisible( "/other_products/product_group/prod_content" , true );

}

IWDatacapture.redraw() ;
}

I've gotten some progress here, and the only issue I have is figuring out how to trigger a function when a user adds another instance of a replicant. Is there a certain event handler that I can use that is triggered when the new replicant instance is added?

I’ll attach my code to this as well. Thanks ahead of time.

Migrateduser

There is, although unsupported. In 6.1 (and perhaps in 6.0), the event is onItemAdded (and conversely, onItemDeleted). In 6.5, there is support for a method different than this (but one that does the same thing) and greater FormAPI functionality.

In 6.0 (which you said you were running) - I don't believe there is any event you can trigger off the adding/removing/changing of replicants.
This functionality was added in 6.5

To add to this, the syntax is the following:

parent.IWDCEventRegistry.addListener('onItemAdded',handleItemAdded);

The bad part about this is that it operates on ANY and ALL replicants you add. Again, I know this works in 6.1 and I'm just guessing that it works in 6.0. It's definitely worth a try, though.

If you're still in development with TS 6.1, you might want to consider going to TS 6.5. You can opt to not install the new features (search and reporting). That would get you the new FormAPI capability you are looking for.

dchristie's using 6.0, but doesn't 6.5 need to be licensed separately? Aside from the migration issues, isn't there additional overhead in the purchasing of a 6.5 license?

The extra license in 6.5 is for reporting.
Other than that I believe it is considered an upgrade and as such is covered under the maintenace contract that most (if not all) customers have (at least that's what I think - whether or not it's true ;-)

Ghoti is correct about 6.5. There is no additional charge to install the release, provided you have a current maintenance contract. If you wish to take advantage of the reporting capability, there is an additional fee.
