changing fields from required to optional

We would like to make certain fields with in the Metatagger GUI optional/required based on what the user selects in another field. The Scenario is:

1) user selects a radio button in the Metatagger GUI
2) if the user selects the "exclude" option then all required fields should be changed to optional. Or the user should be able to save the metadata w/o filling out the required fields.

Is this possible? I know that in templating it's possible to do this with formAPI. However, it doesn't appear like formAPI is available to MT. Is it?

Common request/lament

IW would have much stronger adoption of MT if it could do the things TST does. Don't hold your breath.
