OD compatibility question

Has anyone had any success deploying from an OD 5.6 SP 1 base server to an OD 6.0 receiver? The supported-versions matrix on Interwoven's support site is unclear. It basically reads that OD 6.0 is compatible with OD 6.0, 5.6 and 5.5.1, but OD 5.6 is compatible with OD 5.6, 5.5.1, and 5.0.1. There seems to be a disconnect there.

I've filed a case with support asking the question, but a quick "yes, it worked for me" or "no, we couldn't get it to work" from someone who's tried it would be appreciated.

The base server must always be the same or of a newer version.

Other combinations are not supported (but can work).

Is it possible to have OD 5.6 receiver and OD 6.0 receiver installed on the same box, if I change the port from 20014 to another value? I'm guess that the answer is no, but ...

You can install and run only one release of the legacy OpenDeploy 5.x software on the same
host that contains the current release.
...

The documentation does not state a mix of 5.5 and 6.0.
My guess it is not supported.
Note that multiple instances of 5.5 receivers on the same box is also not supported.

From the OD 6 release notes:

OpenDeploy 6.0 supports deployment to (down-rev) and from (up-rev) OpenDeploy 5.6 or 5.5.1 servers, with the following limitations (several logical limitations documented)

and

When you are upgrading from OpenDeploy 5.6 and 5.5.1 to the current release, the installer will prompt you on whether you want to upgrade the existing base server or receiver software to the current release, or whether you want to install the new software alongside the existing legacy software on the same host.

So things aren't as bleak as I thought.

I currently have OD 5.0 and OD 6.0 receivers installed the same server and haven't had any troubles.

I've installed the OD 6 receiver in parallel with the OD 5.6 receiver. Unfortunately, since they need to be on different ports, I need to get a new hole opened up in the firewall before I can test it completely. But I was able to verify that the OD 5.6 base server could deploy successfully to the OD 6.0 receiver.

Yes, you should be able to deploy from OD 5.6 to 6.0. The ability to perform "up-rev" deployments like this was formally introduced in 6.0. Previous versions of OD didn't support this.

Yes, you can install OD 6.0 on the same host as an OD 5.x. Both versions on a host must be either a base server or receiver. Both must use different ports.

Will it works if I want to deploy from OD 5.6 to 6.0 using filelist deployment? I am asking this because deployment from OD 6.0 to 5.6 using filelist does not work. I know Interwoven is working on a patch for the bug(?). When will the patch be released?

We don't use filelist deployments from our 5.6 boxes, so I can't answer your question.

What I can tell you is that it's working well for us to have both OD 5.6 and OD 6.0 installed on the same box. Let the OD 5.6 base servers deploy to OD 5.6 receiver, and the OD 6.0 base servers deploy to the OD 6.0 receiver. You just need to allocate a second set of ports (and potentially, open up more holes in the firewall).

I suspect there may be a problem with up-rev file list deployments, although I haven't tried it.

My understanding is the patch is going through the QA & release cycle. But you should contact Tech Support for a release time estimate.

However for earlier version keep in mind that the base should be the same or higher version.

Actually, as Dwayne pointed out, there is a statement in the Release Notes about up-rev deployments. It's just not where I thought I'd find it. The next version of the doc will be more clear.
