Moving DCR's
Hazzie
Hi,
We need to reorganise our templatedata folders as their are over 2000 DCRs in 1 copy folder. This although not being a problem to TS, does mean it takes the explorer pop up windows (for browsing up and down directorys etc) an age to populate. Our users up and down the country are starting to complain.
I have this folder structure
Templatedata/assets/copy/
data
/
all dcr's
and i want to move to
Templatedata/assets/copy/
data
/a/
all dcr's begining with a
Templatedata/assets/copy/
data
/b/
all dcr's begining with b
etc
Now the problem is not with moving the DCRS but with the assets that link to the DCRS via the assets EA. Is there to move the DCR and then loop through the DCR to find its assets, go off to the asset, change its EA to the new DCRs location.
This i am sure can be done rather neatly through perl, but i am just missing the little bit of a prod in the right direction about looping through the DCR to find out what assets make up that dcr and its location.
Any suggestions?

Hi Hazzie,
we moved DCRs repeatedly in our prod TS-System, sometimes within one workarea, sometimes from one workarea in another.
Here's our "moving procedure":
1. we extract all extended attributes into a textfile.
write one line per one ea, format is: iwextattr -s myea="value" "/mydcr"
2. next step is to move the dcrs from old to new location
3. then we change all necessary information in our ea-textfile:
e.g. we change the dcr paths
4. then we import the extended attributs:
save the textfile as yourname.bat and start it in your TS-Server

If you used DAS - then you can probably perform a query to retrieve all the files generated against a specific DCR path and avoid having to hunt them all down.
If you didn't use DAS but have some other [relatively] easy way to map from DCRs to their generated files - you can use that to help reduce the amount of time spent searching for all generated files that need to have their EAs altered.
Otherwise, yes, I think you're stuck traversing through the filesystem to find templated files with EAs referencing the moved DCR at its old path and change the EA to point to the new correct path (from a basic script perspective, this would be a lot of use of iwextattr).
One of my customers has a custom menu item in place of the OOTB Move/Copy/Rename functions which takes care of doing this; but we have an EA scheme that we use to map from a DCR to all of its generated files so if we move the DCR we can easily find the generated files. In our case we delete the generated files and re-generate them programmatically, and also take care of deploying changes etc.
It's basiacally a lot of tedious work that is perfet for scripting - just work it out slwoly on paper / with diagrams before hand and then start coding it.

Unfortunatly we do not have DAS.
I was wondering about the DCR -> asset solution, however i wasnt 100% sure on how to go about storing the EA of the asset location to the DCR at generate/regenerate time.
It looks like i will be going for read asset EA, move DCR, re-link Asset to DCR.
If i get chance i will have to try and create this 2 way relationship with some custom functions.
Thansk for your reply.
