TS 6.5 Missing classes event subsystem failure

AllYourBase

Hello all,

We are in the process of upgrading from 5.5.2 to 6.5 on Solaris. After a great deal of mucking about trying to get the event subsystem to use an Oracle DB, we've run into this problem.

From error_log:

These errors seem to be preventing Submit events from generating messages for the event subsystem. Has anyone seen anything like this or have any recommendations? I read through a thread about missing classes in the launchpad directory, but no resolution was posted.

Thanks,

Mike

How have you made this connection?

I think these messages have been around for some time - I don't see how log entries for the launch pad application are related to the event sub system. Can you explain a little more on your findings/conclusion?

That is an excellent question and it has caused me to rethink my approach. To answer the question in a basic way, I do not see any messages being captured in the DB and there are no other errors in my logs.

In a more detailed manner:
Submit events generate event subsystem messages. The DB persists event subsystem messages. No messages are appearing in the DB. This is what leads me to believe that I do not have event subsystem working yet. The only errors in the logs were generated at the time I fired the Submit, so I thought that the errors were related.

Perhaps it would be better if I asked if anyone knows how to certify that the event subsystem is working properly?

Have you looked in

eventsubd.log
iwtrace.log
iwevents.log

particularly for java stack traces etc in eventsubd.log

iwui/error_log is used by the teamsite GUI (apache) to catch anything related to the web front end. I can't be for sure, but I would think it's not related to the server side operations for submissions and the interaction of the event sub system.

iwtrace.log has no errors except the autoprivate file which I believe to be unrelated.
iwevents.log has no errors.
eventsubd.log has no errors. I have just changed the logging in log4j.xml from ERROR to INFO and I will post if I discover anything there.

Thanks, by the way, for your thoughtful questions and help.

eventsubd.log still is not showing any errors. It has alot of entries like this:

07:16:14.353 INFO [EventManager-Worker-3] - GC Collecting Garbage Free Heap below 20
07:16:14.353 INFO [EventManager-Worker-3] - DMGC Collected 0 caches, 0 remaining.
07:16:14.353 INFO [EventManager-Worker-3] - DMGC Collected 0 destinations, 4 remaining.

I successfully submitted a new file in a branch that had been indexed, then did an incremental refresh on the index and search found the new file. That leaves me with some questions.

Does that mean that the event subsystem is working correctly?
If so, why haven't I seen any messages in the DB?
Is there a better way to test that event subsystem is working correctly with the DB?

The driver for me to verify that the event subsystem is working correctly is that I will be configuring DAS to use it and I don't want to complicate the troubleshooting that that is likely to entail.

I think there MAY be a setting that you have to enable in order to fire the events to the subsystem. Don't hold me to that though...

The reason I posted is to explain your log messages. Those messages are a good thing, but you need to post more.

If you can do this, it'll help:

Stop eventsubd.
Backup the logfile.
Set the log4j to DEBUG logging.
Start eventsubd
Paste the first 10-20 lines that appear in the log when it starts up into a reply here.

Additionally, you can verify it's on in the DB by checking the SYSTEM_DATA table, you should see a single row in there. i'm 90% sure that means things are working, but i'll defintitely know when you paste back the log trace.

Thanks Shanon.

from your post, the eventsubsystem is good to go.

it seems that you just have to get the submit event to be logged, which i unfortunately don't know how to do.

i would open the PDF docs for ts admin and open deploy/data deploy and do a pdf search for "submit event" or something like that... it's gotta be some kinda setting... i would think it has something to do with Open(Data)Deploy (they're now the same product in v6.0).

good luck... please post back when you find the answer.

did your case get solved? I have sth similar going on with TS 6.5 sp2 on Solaris 9. Initially set up not to do incremental updates, I now try to reconfigure it. All logfiles show ok, but submit event seem not to be written to db.

EDIT: (My problem is solved.)
ok, my dumb fault. I set ew_enable=false while I meant to set ew_enable=true in iw.cfg. Cfr ts.650a.install.unix.pdf p.65.

Note: the original posts in this thread are over a year old, and may not need further assistance.

Hi,
The eventSubsystem is surely up and running. There is a servlet process running as a webapplication which does the publish to eventsubsystem. I think there are issues with that, Check your log files and try to get the errors removed from there.
