If you just want to change the group then you could use the CLT iwchgrp.exe.

Is that what you want to do?

We are able to change the group but we want to restrict the users to certain branches

I am not sure what you mean here. Do you mean to say directories instead of branches?

We want to restrict certain authors to certain branches
When we created the branches we gave access to all the branches and the workareas inside it
Now we need to restrict them

We restrict user access to branches and workareas using Active Directory groups. These security groups are registered in TeamSite when the branch or workarea is created. If you specify the following options in iw.cfg, you can keep people without access from even seeing branches or workareas they don't have access to.

branch_security=on
workarea_security=on
...
