submit.cfg question
NathansDIS
Is it possible to set folder permissions via submit.cfg if those folders have spaces in the folder names? Does this fly in the face of best practices or simply not work? I notice looking at the folder we have set in submit.cfg now, that we don't have any spaces in folder names. FYI, we are using TS 6.1 SP1 on Windows 2000 servers. Thanks for your input, advice, flames, etc.
For Example:
^/default/main/DSHS/Executive_Administration/WORKAREA/.*$
{
^/Leg Rel/.*$
{
owner="ssv\\dshsecm"
setaccess = { ... ,"SSVAPOLYTS1D\\Administrators:ALL","SSVAPOLYTS1D\\TeamSite Web Preview:ALL" }
}
^.*$
{
owner="ssv\\dshsecm"
setaccess = { "ssv\\l-s-ssv DSHS EA Web Pub 1:ALL","ssv\\L-S-SSV DIS EBS ECM Admins:ALL","SSVAPOLYTS1D\\Administrators:ALL","SSVAPOLYTS1D\\TeamSite Web Preview:ALL" }
}
}
Should this regex be: ^/LegRel/.*$

well, first off, using spaces in file ( and directory ) names is imo not a good thing... it just opens up a can of worms in 9/10 cases...
that said, it should still work. i personally have never tested it, however i'm thinking that it's probably your reg exp... i'm kind of confused after reading your post, but your regexp must exactly match the directory...
so if the vpath is like this:
..../Leg Rel/...
then your regexp should be /.*Leg Rel/ or something ( with the space ).
this pattern will do either w/ or w/out spaces:
/.*Leg\s?Rel/
if this isn't what you're looking for, maybe post a little more detail?

Thanks for your input. I think it's general web programming best practices not to have spaces in the file names. I hope this customer can clean this up before their move into TeamSite. Thanks again for your time.

Hi
It is of course a matter of opinion but imo supporting spaces in file names and directory names is a good thing. It is a little more development and test work I admit but I think it enhances the usability of your final product. Our language has spaces, we have the technology, it is the 21st century
and otherwise thingsareprettyhardtoread or_frustrating_to_type_in..
Of course, that is just my 2 cents

michael,
valid points -- it totally depends on your preference. To remedy usability issue, i would let the user put in the spaces and then swap them with underscores in my onsubmit event du jour.
some more thoughts...
typing them in is a pain, but reading underscore-delimited words is fine when compared with all the time and effort that will be spent supporting spaces. oh, and cat'ing words w/out any delimiter is no good either... we like when users can read their filenames.
for the record, in one of our apps we recently started to restrict our user filenames to alphanumeric, periods, dashes, and underscores only ... it has saved so much headache i can't even begin to tell you. people don't realize when certain characters cause issues ( e.g. "&" tears up certain PERL code ) and it just eases my mind not having to worry about it...

Also very valid points. Depending on your priorities I can fully accept that the dev and test time supporting spaces could be spent developing more exciting functionality....well as exciting as it gets in a CMS anyhoo
.
Thanks for the tips about automatically converting user entered filenames -- it seems pretty obvious but I hadn't really considered it before -- good one!!
This is somewhat off topic (as if we haven't deviated on this thread enough already) but have you ever had a problem with filenames with two periods (not necessarily adjacent - eg foo.dcr.xml) -- possibly specifically with OpenDeploy but I never got a chance to look into it... bit of a vague problem description sorry.
Cheers
Michael
