Move a branch within same backing store
lawspetvetri
Hi,
Is there a way to move branches to a different hierarchy level within the same backing store with all the file histories maintained.
Any help in this regard is highly appreciated.
FYI, we are using TS 5.5.2 SP4 on Solaris 8 platform with webserver Netscape Sun One 6.0.
Thanks in advance.

Theoretically you might be able to use iwrename or File > Move or File > Rename within the GUI to do this.
I have no idea if and/or how well it works, but ...
I'd strongly recommend that you run iwfsck -d on your backing store beforehand to make sure you have a good backing store, then back it up, and *then* attempt to do this (after which run iwfsck -d again) -- even better, if you have a development server to try it out on first ...

iwrename and File -> Rename just change the name of something, they don't move it to a new location.
Pretty sure that File -> Move will only work on files and directories within a workarea, not on a branch.
I'm not sure that there is a way to restructure existing branches. The only thing close to that that I can think of is to create your new branch structure, and then use Copy To Area to move content from your old branch structure to the new one. File history will be preserved. You could then rename your old branches to something like "zzzzzzzzzzzzzz - old stuff" ("zzz..." so that it shows up last alphabetically). Perhaps you could also put very restrictive permissions on the old branch structure, so that very few people could create workareas, submit, publish, etc. I think that if you *delete* the old branches, then you'll lose the file history therein.
Good luck.

I forgot to emphasize the word
might
in my previous post - but yes, apparently rename will only work within the same directory structure and move only works on files and/or directories not branches.

Thanks all for the suggestions.
Perhaps, restricted permissions was the last option that we had in mind if we could not find any other way.
Thanks again.
