Please help! oracle 9i upgrade kills DB connection

Hello all, im in need of urgent help. we are on TS 5.5.2 sp2 and DD/OD 5.6 (no service packs). our DB group recently upgraded to oracle 9i and all our database connections via inline callout no longer work. here are the steps i took after the upgrade to update my IW configuration:

1) updated database.xml to point to new SID and port

2) updated jmsconfig.xml url attribute to point to new SID and port

3) updated ODBC setting on windows 2000 server to point to new database (test connection works fine)

4) updated our ipls to point to new oracle instance

now when i try to load any DCT w/ an inline callout, it hangs for hours. finally it will give this error message:

The required parameter iw_tdt is missing.

we guessed that the supplied DBI module isnt compatible with 9i, so finally we tried to update our DBI and ODBC pm modules from CPAN.org. now get this error:

i dont want to update the perl modules as this seems to be unsupported and leading us down a slippery slope. any help would be GREATLY appreciated, thanks!

As far as I am aware there are no DBI/DBD drivers for oracle 9i that operate with the version of iwperl in TS 5.5.2.

TS 6.1 includes an updated iwperl that resolves this issue -- but that probably doesn't help you in the short term.

What we have used successfully is installing ActiveState Perl 5.8 and pointing the inline scripts at it's perl.exe. You will need to install your the oracle dbi/dbd into ActivePerl.

hmm wait so DD 5.6 supports Oracle 9i but ts 5.5.2 doesnt support 9i for inline callouts and all iwperl related tasks? arrrghhhhhhhhh

ok i installed activestate perl on my dev server, changed my datacapture cfg to run the script using it, now i get this error.

i placed the new DBI.pm in C:\Perl\site\lib

ok i read you cant just paste the DBI.pm module into the perl folder, you need to install it somehow. what are the steps to install it? are there any additional modules i need to download to get my inline scripts to work?

finally, will installing this DBI module overwrite/corrupt the one installed by IW?

The Perl modules generally come with their own documentation - which will tell you about how to install it.
However, the perl modules are also generally based on a specific version of the perl engine (x.x or higher) - and in the case of Oracle 9i - I believe you need a base version of perl that is either 5.6x or 5.8x - and while iwperl in TS6 is 5.8.2, iwperl in all previous versions of TS is 5.005_03 - and thus probably will NOT support the latest DBI modules that you need to communicate with Oracle 9i.

Therefore - your choices are:
1) Install a separate version of Perl that you use *only* to connect to Oracle and that you do *might* be able to use certain TS-specific modules but only by doing a: use lib "/path/to/iw-home/iw-perl/..."
2) Upgrade to TS6.1SP1 (or higher)

Do NOT attempt to install the latest DBI modules with TS5.5.2's iwperl (well, you can attempt it, but don't expect it to work).
Do NOT attempt to replace the version of perl that ships with 5.5.2 with a newer version (again, you could attempt it, but don't expect it to work and don't expect Interwoven Support to help you with anything after you've done that).

fish, thanks as usual for your feedback. well i did start to try the first option u mentioned (by installing activestate perl)

however, it requires the updated DBI modules (i couldnt get it to work w/ the current iw modules) and i didnt want to install the new ones due to the problem you mentioned (corrupting/overwriting IWs module)

ok now the modules part of my inline callout looks like this, is it correct?

Read: perldoc lib for more information about pointing one version of perl to an alternate location for modules.
Although, the more I think about it, it may be preferable to do a push(@INC, "..."); rather than a use lib ...; or unshift(@INC, "..."); since you will probably want to make sure that the 5.5.2 module library is the last library directory searched rather than the first.

I suppose you could copy the modules from 5.5.2's iw-perl tree into your active-state tree, but that will probably get to be a bit confusing and will then be unclear as to what modules came from where if/when something goes wrong.

I'm in roughly the same boat - as my customer is currently using 5.5.2 and looking to use Oracle 9i - but we are planning to upgrade to 6.x as soon as we get a patch / fix / whatever for the way that cgi-callouts interact with the new TS6 metadata capture UI (what was the MetaTagger UI). Once that's taken care of I'll be working on making sure that the TS6.1 iw-perl can communicate with the Oracle 9i server. (no ETA for when this will be completed ... yet)

im still not sure how, but our 5.5.2 inline callouts started working with 9i after our DBA did something with the microsoft ODBC connection. i did nothing additional other than the steps i mentioned above. thanksfully, i dont have to continue down the activestate perl solution route.
