Returning Error from Java Servlet

I am overriding the TS delete functionality. As well as doing some other validation, I need to check that the user has permissions to delete a file, before the deletion occurs.

I wanted it to act the same as TeamSite, and delete the files they are allowed to, but when the operation is complete, return to the original page(already doing this) and display a popup box with a list of files and reasons they could not be deleted.

Does anyone know how I could do this? Or any places to start or look?
