6.5 Events database size

Hi all,
I was wondering if anyone knows what size to setup the initial RDBMS sql db for the events sub system? I would like to set it up so I can use the search feature but no where in the documentation does it say how large to start with for a db (no surprise Smiley Happy

I noticed that the out of the box db using <iw-home>\eventsubsystem\openjms.db is around 6.6GB which is huge!!! I can't imagine there being a need for anything more than say 2GB for the events db since the search engine (Verity) uses its own data tree in another location.

any thoughts?

Yes,
The events db itself need not be too big (2 GB is fine). The default database run to 6.6 GB because of a bug in the thirdparty software where the database entries are not cleaned. This issue does not arise with an RDBMS.

Unfortunately since this is open source software there has been no committment to fix this issue in the default database. In fact there are other issues (which appear under high load) which also are not being addressed. This is the main reason we do not recommend using the default database except for simple test scenarios.

Flat-file database - no, I don't think so, I don't recall any options about where to put the db, so it ends up on the TS box (not good).

Relational database - yes, just specify the server etc. in the connection string (perfect).

well, short answer is yes, but you MUST consider the fact that wherever the datafile is, the subsystem needs to have fast IO speeds to it.

if you really want to change it:

iwhome/eventsubsystem/conf/jmsconfignew.xml

do a search for openjms.db and you'll see where it's set.

What does the size of this DB depend on ? e.g. peak number of concurrent submits ? etc.
Is there a way to calculate this ? (maybe based on the number of users? or content size? or submis ?)
If anybody has setup RDBMS for events, what was the initial size ? Did you need to increase it ?

I just found out that if you choose the free mysql database for your event subsystem, the database size will not automatically shrink when the rows are deleted from tables. Check out this link:

Therefore, the size depends on what database you choose, too.

Since that is a bug in MySQL, I assume Oracle/MS SQL Svr should not have such an issue - unless they have a similar bug! Right ?

Looking in the admin, install and release notes, I am unable to find this information.

Perhaps interwoven could jump in here and outline these requirements.

Anytime a database is required, they are the first quesions asked, but I have no answers for the db guys.

5. What about the index size? (is there one?)
6. What rights does the user need (does it dynamically create tables other objects etc)
7. What about the maximum concurrent connections. It is one user that teamsite connects via, but is there a connection pool?

There are a zillion questions our dba people request, I haven't been able to answer them properly.

I have some questions about this too. openjms.db is filling up my disk. How can I limit the size of this file? I imagine since we are not using the reporting feature, that we don't need to keep this event info for long. Just long enough to feed the index and search services.

Sunil, do you care to drop your 2 cents on this one? I dont' know how I am going to be able to put this into production in good conscience if I don't have a definitive answer for the questions in this thread.

Turn it off.

IWOV supplied an open source component (openjms) but when they realized there was a bug with the disk db they just said to use a rdbms and haven't bothered to fix the problem themselves. Considering the amount of open source software they use - they aren't in any hurry to contribute back.

If you look through this post - you'll find that they haven't been very helpful in supplying rdbms specs if you go that route.

Turn it off. So in the services console just stop "Interwoven Event Subsystem" (and then set it to manual for the start up options)

You do realize that you can't just "turn it ott" and forget about it Because it will restart any time you restart Teamsite.

My buddies at Interwoven support report that to turn off the event subsystem for good, you have to comment out the appropriate lines in /etc/init.d/iw.server as well.

That's how I stopped it for good... I shut down the even subsystem and then commented it out of iw.server to prevent it from starting again. I also set the eventsubsystem flag to false in iw.cfg but that didn't appear to do too much.
