Move branches & keep History

When you want to change your branching structure and you want to move branches into the new structure from the old one what is the process? Also does this impact file history and editions? I need to preserve that and I dont want to have two branching structures.

If you have never done this before, I would strongly suggest you try this in a development environment first - if you have one.
