VisualFormat: def. values in Hyperlink dialog box?

Hi,
Has anyone had success setting default values in the VisualFormat Hyperlink dialog box? In particular I want to set target=_blank.
I had a look at the Ektron Developer guide at
http://www.ektron.com/software/released/ewebeditproxml/v32/drg/wwhelp/js/html/frames.htm
(go to Index -> Hyperlink dialog box -> default values) but the instructions confuse me.
Would appreciate plain-English instructions from anyone who's done it before.
