WorkSite Index Clustering
System
Reading up on Clustering, especially with Indexes and find the subject a little confusing ; there is one area that I cannot seem to pin-down - I've been through the design guide several times - and there is little info on the actual clustering of indexes (even in the Clustering Add-On Manual).
if you have 2 Index Servers both running as a cluster, pointing to a shared index collection - can the Index Manager service, sit on one of these or does it have to be on a separate machine?
The books state the following facts;
a) Index Manager must sit on server where index collection is stored
b) Index Manager cannot be clustered.
Therefore can I have one server in the cluster running the Index Server, and one running the Index Server and Index Manager - with the index collection stored locally but shared so that the other server can access it?
Any recommendations?
Cheers
Darryl.

You are correct, you can have a server with the index collection and running index manager, with the index search running on both that server and another server.
These 2 search services can then be clustered. This will have no affect on the index manager service, or any other service on the server.
As to what the recommended configuration is, I'm not sure. Unless the network connection is very fast the 2nd server's search service will be slower. (then again, as the Index manager service is running on the other, this may slow down the search on that server). How the Index search cluster handles this, I've no idea.
Hope this is of some help

This isn't life in the fast lane, it's life in the oncoming traffic.

Yes i am in the same boat at my clients (2000 users).
I ended up setting it up the same with a two node search service cluster with the search manager on one of the nodes. Have yet to test performance but if iWov have any performance recomendations I'd be interested to know.....
