I am using:
iwserver: 5.5.2 Build 17976 Interwoven 20030323

i have a simple perl file

#!/usr/iw-home/iw-perl/bin/iwperl

use utf8;

print 'ok';

from the command line i issue:
/usr/iw-home/iw-perl/bin/iwperl temp.ipl

but i get the following.

I notice that presentation template code generated using iwpt_compile.ipl uses utf-8;
Does anyone have any ideas?

I am trying to read a file and extract it's meta tags but i am losing characters such as `
does using utf-8 resolve this issue?

The utf8 module was not shipped with 5.5.2 (at least not with SP2 and apparenly not with whatever SP version you're running either).

The utf8 module is shipped with TS6.x

on 5.5.2 There are modules like:
- TeamSite::I18N_utils
- TeamSite::I18N
- Unicode::Map8
and several other modules that might be related - however, if you want the utf8 module, you'll probably have to download it from CPAN - and be very sure to get one that works with the old Perl 5.500_03 (it may not be easy to find).

Is this line of text copied from MS Word by any chance?

My guess is that you have a "smart-quote" within the text - which is a high-order bit character and that if you look at the HTML code with a decent editor you'll find that there's some \xxxx strings in there - which if you use the correct regex in your Perl code you could probably translate from a smart-quote to a single-quote and everything would be reasonably happy.

I guess it is pasted from word.

I opened up the file with a hex editor and it is three bytes the character in question is represented as three bytes: e2 80 99

As it is friday afternoon i'll tell my content editors to use single quotes.
