Folder counting in WS web 8

My client would like to in the web component see a number next to a folder indicating the number of documents in the folders below it (i.e. recursive total).
This is so that if there are no docs in a folder the user needn’t browse down there.

My idea is to put a trigger on the project items table for inserts and updates . When an item is added to a folder all the parents of that doc up the tree would get incremented and the number would be appended to the folder name..

Is there a better way than this that you can think of ?
