Multiple "." in a file name
mike_jaixen
We are preparing to upgrade to 6.5, and noticed that one of the "fixed bugs" is 54388, which says that "When generating an output file that has more than one '.' in the file name (such as test.test.html), an error message is issued indicating an invalid extension." We have approximately 1000 DCR's that have periods in the middle of the file name, and currently generate to files such as 5.5.1.html; does this bug fix mean that this is now allowed, or that it will now cause an error. It currently works fine in 5.5.

I would guess this bug was introduced in 6.0 because of the massive code rewrite. Now only with 6.5 can you generate a output file with multiple periods. So previous versions of the 6.x product wouldn't of allowed you do generate a filename like
5.5.1.html
.
At least that is my interpretation.

Could someone from Interwoven confirm this? We are preparing to upgrade, and if this is the case, it will push us towards 6.5 instead of 6.1

I looked up the bug in question - here's the steps to repro:
Env:
Server: TS6.1 sp1, win2k
Client: win2k, IE6.0
When try to generate file and the output file name has a "." inside and the last characters are not matching the extension set in templating.cfg, user will get error complaining about invalid extension.
Steps to reproduce:
1) use out-of-box templating intranet/weather;
2) create a dcr and save it (CC standard or CC Pro not matter);
3) set the extension to "html" in templating.cfg;
3) Click "Form Settings", enter into Select an Output File: test.test;
4) Error is:
The output path test.test does not have a valid extension for the presentation template weather.tpl. Valid extensions are: html. Please change the extension.
Comments from xsun: "test.test" is not a valid file name because the its extension is "test" instead of "html". "test.test.html" should be a valid file name which doesn't work in TS6.1SP1.
The original bug was fixed in 5.5.2 SP2. It looks like TS 6.1 had a regression for this fix.
The bug is marked as fix-verified in Content Services 2.5, which is what ships with TS 6.5.

I hope IW strongly considers a 6.1 patch for this. We are in the process of spec'ing out the 6.1 upgrade and this could be very serious. I do not expect to go to 6.5 soon, but we do have a number of DCRs with periods.
It certainly would be a showstopper for us.

If you have a business need for a TS 6.1 patch for this issue please contact tech support. thanks.

you could try to run a script that would substitute dots with something else.. like underscores... and run it recursively. Also, extended attributes for templated files have to be changed accordingly.
believe me, this will be a way faster than to wait for a black patch .....

Of course that would break all urls pointing to those pages.
Fortunately I can use Interwoven's dependancy checker to find those. Wait, there is not one
of those, now is there.
Good reason to stay with 5.5.2

I don't quite understand why this would break links. The goal is to change all DCRs and all references to them (in EAs and anywhere else).

We like to keep the DCRs path/name consistant with the generated HTML.
So the DCR greg.zevin would generate (automatically via workflow) greg.zevin.html
changing the DCR and generated html to greg_zevin would then break any links to it
gzevin
true. but this could be done by parsing and changing underlying DCRs, all in one go...
provided you really want to move to 6....
