from your previous question it was clear that you are just staring with perl
I would advise you to read up some perl manuals or quick elarning guides.
as for -> - it's a dereferencing operator.
e,g, you have an variable that contains a reference to an array, e..g.:
$foo=[1,2,3];
$foo->[2] will return you 3

I doubt he's going to get the reference to references. Check out
perldoc perlref
for far more than you ever wanted to know about using references in perl. This is pretty critical stuff if you are going to become a competent perl programmer, because in perl5, all objects are references, and all complex data structures are either lists of references of hashes of references.
