increase search engine ranking

System

Can anyone describe any techniques they have used to successfully increase search engine ranking of their sites/pages maintained in the CMS? I just read that because of "spam", many engines now ignore meta keywords.

TIA,

John,

Depends on if you are referring to site-level search tools or Internet search engines. If your goal is to improve the quality of search on your website, site search tools should respect META tags in the HTML. Internet engines, by contrast, will rely more on the viewable content of the page, structure and inbound links for ranking. Search engine optimization is really a field unto itself, complimenting frugal use of good metadata with other techniques (structure optimization, inbound link propagation, ...) to coerce higher rankings from search engines.
