general javascript

Ottawa_IWOV

I need some general javascript help, so I thought this would be the best place.

I am presenting the user w/ a form. They are able to select an item (checkbox), and based on that I want to grab the value from a select list. So in general

checkbox 1, select list 1
(get the values from both)

I am able to get the checkbox values no problem at all, just when I try to get the select value, my JS bonks.
I am naming my select lists like:

name0
name1
name2

Any help would be well received ...

Thanks,

Consider posting your code ?

shanon

okay, w/out code it's tough, but i'm guessing you're just not referring to the objects properly.

i always just goto [link]http://www.devguru.com[/link] and look at their JS references, really good.

just off the top of my head, are you using the options array w/ the select object?

// if selectObj is a select object:
var selectedValue = selectObj.options[selectObj.selectedIndex].value;

if this isn't it, post the code .

What is the error you are getting? You can try wrapping your offending code in a try/catch block to see what the message is. Accessing values in a select box is done differently depending on whether you are using a multi-select or single-select. Which are you using?

shanon

chuckles,

how is it different b/t single and multi?

Here is the Javascript

<script language="JavaScript">
function testResults (form) {

var update = document.forms[0].update.value;
if (update) {
//var update = document.forms[0].collName1.options[1].text;
//alert(update);
//Grab the list of values that are selected in the FORM
for(var y = 0 ; document.forms[0].add; y++)
{
if (document.forms[0].add.checked)
{
alert (document.forms[0].add.value);

}

}

}
}
</script>

I based upon the checkbox value (referenced with y as the index) I want to grab the value from a select list (single check only). Now, I think the majoc lies in HOW these select list are name, because they will be repaeated for each checkbox option ...

Thanks,

Try to use attached. Hope that helps...

shanon

This might be easier to accomplish if I can do this

Here is a reference to a form OBJECT
document.forms[0].vpath.options[2].value;

However, I want to dynamically build this string. Notice vpath in the above string, that is coming from a checkbox. What is the right sintax for dynamically putting this string together?

Migrateduser

There is an eval() function in Javascript which might accomplish what you're trying to do -- i.e. reference a dynamically-named object.

For instance:

var checkboxValue = document.forms[0].checkbox.value;
var selectValue = eval('document.forms[0].' + checkboxValue + '.options[document.forms[0].' + checkboxValue + '.selectedIndex].value');
alert(selectValue);

What would be alerted is the value of the drop-down list whose name corresponds to the value of some checkbox element.

Does JavaScript have the equivalent of .= in Perl for pushing into a scalar inside a loop?

Migrateduser

The equivalent would look something like this:

var string = '';
for (var i=1;i<=5;i++) {
   string = string + i;
}
alert(string);

The result would be "12345"; Honestly, I'm not sure if there's a slightly more succinct way of doing this, like string += i, or if that's strinctly for math, but a little bit of testing could find this out.

.= is perl
+= is java(script)

With a single-select you can make use of the selectedIndex property of the select object. For a multi-select, you need to loop through every option object and check the selected property. The multi-select method actually works in both scenarios, but it is less efficient and involves passing arrays instead of scalars.

Also, the eval is not necessary. Any property that can be accessed via a member property (forms[0].elementName) can also be accessed as a hash value (forms[0][elementName]). The hash approach is highly recommended - especially if you are using dynamic values - for multiple reasons. One is that it precludes the need to use an eval and second is that the element name may contain a space which causes the member property approach to barf.
