Migration

raviswamy

I would be migrating two huge branches from 4.5.1 to 6.1 and know that each branch takes more than a day. My initial thought was to one branch at a time which would then take more than two days. On second thoughts I would like to start two migrations at the same time so that both the branches get migrated at the same time.

Any idea about the impact on the servers or any other concerns ?

My reply is that, based on your question, you really do not know what you are doing. Or
you have not explained it very well.

Can you go from 4.5 to 6.X ? Yes. It is a multi-step, multiple conversion process.
If you are planning to convert the backingstore, then you have a very long task ahead
of you.

I am doing a 4.5 to 6.5 migration. Instead of converting the backingstore, I am moving
branches individually from the old server to the new server. You lose all history (unless
you start importing Editions) but it is much quicker and will save a ton of space.

If you are asking can you 2 branches like that concurrently, likely yes, provided you have
enough FS resourses to do so. This will chewy up a great deal of CPU and memory on the
import, but it was on the export (for us) that was the problem. Since this server (4.5) is
woefully underpowered (not uncommon for technology implemented in 1999/2000) and
currently in use, the export of data & EAs put a significant strain on our users.
