CGI Callout for validating xml

Hi,
I'm trying to validate xml entered in a textarea field oa DCT. I have created a button by the side of textarea with a cgi callout like this.

Now I created a fomrapi script file validate.js with the callServer

I want to use the Interwoven iwxml_validate.ipl script to validate my xml. I'm planning to create a cgi script at /app/iw-home/httpd/iw-bin/xmlValidate.cgi.
What should I have in the cgi scrpt to use iwxml_validate.ipl script. How can I pass the created xml file name to the cgi script?
Please let me know if anybody did something similar. Thx

I'd create a full blown CGI script. It will take the contents of the field and,create a temp file and run validation with the results displayed in the callout window...

I'm not sure if this is what Greg was suggesting - but if you're going to use FormAPI - use FormAPI, if you're going to use a CGI, use a CGI, and try as much as possible not to use both.

The reason I suggest trying not to use both is that in order to use both you end up using CallServer (as you indicated you were planning to do) and that means you are going to be using an asynchronous process for performing this activity which muddies the waters a lot.

Let's take a step back and get a bit more detail about what you're trying to do:

I'm trying to validate xml entered in a textarea field

First - Is this really a textarea or is it a text field?
Second - What are you trying to validate?

The fact that information of any kind was entered?
That a certain amount of characters or words between a minimum and maximum amount were entered?
That certain formatting constructs were / were not used within the textarea?
something else - what?

Depending on what you are trying to do - certain strategies for how to do it may be better suited.

yes, you got me right.. I would use either of those, however, if a call to an external script is mentioned, I'd use perl.. in CGI.

I think they just need to validate an XML .... I mean to check whether XML enter in a textarea is valid or not

This may be handy to some..

Attached is a framework (or an example of) for synchronizing callServer requests.
It's especially handy in environments where there can be many calls depending on certain independent events, but it's nice and solid for simple use as well.

It's a simple message queue to serialize call server requests and it provides a standard method for retrieving information from a call server back to the dct.

1. include the callServerManager.js file
2. queue your requests with this line


 callServerManager.addCallServer("somescript.ipl", params, 
   a_callback_reference, status_string, error_string);

More detail is in the datacapture.cfg

Documentation should probably be better, but if you go through the code, it should be fairly straight forward to figure out.

start with the dct, then the .js, then the cgi.

I'm trying to validate the xml code entered in a text area. I'm using a cgi-callout in the DCT and I created a cgi script at /app/iw-home/httpd/iw-bin/xmlValidate.cgi. This script runs fine when I run at the command propmt (perl xmlValidate.cgi), but getting a error when I call it from the DCT. My Code is below. Any Ideas what this error is

What version of TS are you using?
If (version < 6.0) - your script should begin with:#!/opt/iw-home/iw-perl/bin/iwperl -w

use warnings;Once you take care of that - and clean up all warnings - there's a better chance that you'll succeed. Right now, as your code was posted - PrintDebug refrences @query_string - but the definition of that variable is commented out higher up in the code.

The error message is admittedly strange - as it looks like iw_cgi_wrapper.cgi is attempting to write data into/through your script - and it's failing to do so - perhaps there's a permissions problem?

Hmm - I tried using this and I seem to be running into a problem with it.
I keep getting:

I tried increasing the timeout from 7 to 10 seconds - I suppose I could keep trying to increase the timeout value, but I have a feeling there's something more intrinsically wrong.

Any ideas?

Nope - created a file called blank.html with <html><body/></html> as the contents and that didn't seem to fix anything.
Guess I'll go back to my old callServer code - but I'd be curious to know why yours seems to fail this way for me.

hmmm well blank should definitely be there, I got it from the form api documentation.

If it's timing out, it means that the callback isn't being executed.

Post your DCT with the addCallServer Method (including the callback as well)

The callback param should be the reference to the method (IE not a string param).

That's very strange if you are just using the files I sent, they work for me.

Perhaps the CGI is not running (shebang line??) .. see if you can run the CGI from the browser (url) directly, try to compile it from the command line.
