6.5 on Windows Wierd Error

I'm on Windows 2000 and have been working on the workflows for a couple weeks. This a.m. I started getting the following error when I do either a submit or a new job.

I get this error with ALL workflows and not just the new ones.

I've even tried to use the default and solutions workflows, and the appropriate comments show up for the author_submit and the configurable_author_submit, and I get it with both of those. So I don't think the issue is with the available templates file.

could the parser.pm be corrupt?

Could you have maybe made a change to your available_templates.cfg? There could be some strange chars at the top of that file?
I've seen it with templating.cfg. Try opening it in something like Notepad or something.

Just a shot in the dark there.

I'm unfortunately familiar with this problem -- if it's what I think it is, you may have been editing available_templates.cfg in a text editor that writes Windows (or other) characters that the parser does not understand. If you have an editor that can show the Hex equivalents of your text file, you'd be able to see it from there. But if I were a betting man, which I certainly am, I'd put my money on that.

I appreciate the advice, but I did remember that issue, and tried it. I also had someone email me thier example available templates cfg file in case i'd accidently edited that before, and I still get the same error.

Any other ideas? I also compared the parser.pm files with the other and they are the same.

Something that drove me crazy for almost a day this past January is that no matter how many times I restored a "good" copy of the config file, it'd still pick up those weird characters. Since we determined that I'm a betting man and I don't like to lose bets

, are you able to open it up in a hex editor? If not, attach it here and I'll look at it through UltraEdit.

I'm happy to post, and I looked to make sure my editor was showing all characters and I don't see anything odd, but I'll attache just in case. I even checked to see which files were modified since yesterday and I don't see anything odd.

Okay, well it looks as though I've lost a bet! Your available_templates.cfg looks fine to me, too. Let me attack this at a different angle, though. At what point do you receive this error? Are you able to see the list of available workflows?

Thanks for the extra effort on this one. I do appreciate it. I get past the point where I would have to select a particular
workflow if it applies.. i.e. if I have 2 that both work on submit.

I get to the section where I select the author, description, priority etc. Then when I click submit I get the error.
I don't see anything off had on the logs. I am going to clear them out and re-boot.

Any other ideas?

AHA! Sorry, but I like playing "detective".

If the problem were in your cfg file, you wouldn't get that far. I'd suggest the problem might be in your WFT files. So we can rule this out, could you inspect a WFT file the same way you inspected the CFG file? This type of error sounds like an unrecognized character issue.

A few things to check -

- Check the permissions on the .wft file and all directories leading to .wft
- Check if iw-home/tmp/cci directory exists. I have seen error when this directory was (accidently) deleted.
- Does it matter what role you login as ? (I am guessing you will get the error regardless or role)
- Try to turn on debugging, see if you can get the XML job spec.
- Try starting the workflow from CLT (if you get the job spec by debug mode)
- Check if you are running out of disk space.
- Does iwreset -a make a difference ?

It was the "Check if iw-home/tmp/cci directory exists. I have seen error when this directory was (accidently) deleted."

I did delete this directory. I was trying out the sample external task, and just did a cntrl a and deleted everything... hey it's a TMP directory... everything in a tmp directory by definition should be able to be deleted... and if not please don't have a sample that writes there :-)
