Default filename when generating webfile from DCR?

Greetings All,

I'm starting development with the Interwoven content Manager and have a very *noobish* question I hope can be answered. How can I set a default filename when generating specific dcrs?... Is this something that needs to be worked out in a Workflow or in a config file ie. Templating.cfg or datacapture.cfg

I understand you're new, but I'm confused by your terminology. "Generating" generally refers to processing a DCR into a (in most cases) web-presentable file. So, what do you want to do? Are you referring to having the DCT dictate through FormAPI a default filename for a new DCR? Or, are you interested in having the DCR generate into a file of a specified name?

I'll ask the regular questions, also... what version of Teamsite (including patches)? What OS?

I guess there is a concept of Knowledge Management , where you can have a dcr to name it self while saving and when you submit it using a user workflow, you can include a Generate File, task in it to actually generate a file with the same name as your DCR. this can be done. Can you be precise as you wanted default name through a workflow or not. IF not i would agree with dave.

This is exaclty what I want done but also have the option to save the file with an arbitrary name as well. This way the user does not have to keep track of what to name the file when generating a dcr.

Okay, well what's your policy? If you want to have the DCR automatically save under a predefined, programmatically-determined name, then you would use IWDCRInfo.setDCRName() (check the documentation for that, it's all in there). But how would they have the "option"? What determines that? It sounds like the users don't know what they want.

DCRs (Data Content Records) are saved by filling in a DCT (Data Capture Template) form - they're not usually referred to as being generated (though technically they are).
"Pages" (usually HTML) are "generated" from DCRs via PTs (Presentation Templates).

If you look at the FormAPI manual - there is some documentation in there about pre-naming DCRs - however this can also be handled via workflow by creating an "empty" DCR with the desired name in the desired location and setting the proper EAs (Extended Attributes) on it - and then providing the user with the opportunity to edit the DCR to fill in all the various fields.

To automatically name the pages generated from the DCRs via PTs you would need to use a workflow (or custom menu item) to provide the correct output name on the command line to either the iwgen or iwpt_compile.ipl CLTs.

When I say have the option...I mean this...When hitting the "Generate" link on a DCR...a form pops up with a field asking what to name the file...I just want this field to be autopopulated with a "programatic-determined" value...but I also want the user to be able to change the defaulted filename if needed.

Okay, that's more clear... in this case, you'd want to use a workflow that's started on tt_data (the user would need to use the FINISH button rather than the GENERATE link). The workflow could have a CGI task that starts with immediate="t", which prompts the user for the generated file name.

Sound good?

If you use this approach, you may want to remove the GENERATE link altogether, as this might confuse people.

I think many people here on Devnet (including myself) are big proponents of workflow... as I was typing that previous post, though, I was wondering how it could be done without a workflow. That is, having the default name be auto-populated in the SAVE FILE dialogue, which one could then overwrite. I don't believe there's a supported way of doing this, and it seems that a hack would require more work than writing an additional workflow.

Well - you could hide the OOTB Generate button and put your own cgi-callout button for performing the Generate function into the DCT -- using FormAPI to verify that when the button is clicked the DCR is in a saved-state before running the actual CGI program. The cgi-callout script could then pop-up a window with a default for the output filename that the user could change before submitting the CGI form - which would then run either iwgen or iwpt_compile.ipl as you see fit.

Thank you, the reason for me hoping for a non-workflow solution is because of our current development structure. All workflows are done by our System Admin currently and for this particular project he is not allocated. Thanks for shedding some light on this issue and giving me insight on the direction I have to take.

Ghoti's suggestion was in the back of my head, but I couldn't get my thoughts to flow as nicely and post it here. His suggestion is entirely valid, although it has the potential of leaving some files around that had been named by default but the user has chosen to name differently.

I'm kinda curious why you're veering away from using a workflow.

Anyone know if there is a feature request to have the generated file name be the same as the dcr name... I know we can do it with workflow, but if we don't go that way... it would be nice to be able to let the user save the dcr as the filename they want... i.e. dave_bio, and then the generated file would be dave_bio.htm anyway just curious if this was a feature request or not
