Java Developer workstation configuration

Windows 2003

I am working on building out some complex servlet/JSP add ons for the content center user interface and was hoping to develop the code using the eclipse development environment on a client computer. Is there anyone out there who has done this and how were things setup to easily run and test servlets and jsps that were written using CS SDK components.

I am hoping to minimize effort here and make this as easy as possible. I have begun to setup a windows xp client with eclipse and started to download tomcat plugins and install tomcat, get the cs sdk jars copied over, etc. when I thought there may be an easier way to do this.

Anyone have guidance for me?

I know that the engineering team used the Eclipse software for some development work on CS way back in the 5.5.2 devleopment days. I don't know how easy/hard it was, but it was achievable at least.

I was hoping to use an eclipse environment to develop some complex extensions for the Content Center UI. I was trying to avoid setting all of this up on the windows 2003 server and was hoping to just test it locally on a client and then move it up to the server. Is that possible, useful to do, or do I need to install eclipse on the TeamSite server and just use terminal services to log into the windows server to perform the work?

The better question may be how are people developing their extensions to the UI? I used textpad for some simple servlets and jsps I wrote but could have saved some time if I was able to leverage a full blown IDE like Eclipse. Anyone out there doing this?

Bill were you able to setup eclipse for CSSDK development work. I have already developed the application locally but want to deploy the app to TeamSite server so looking for a way to transfer set the TeamSite customization structure locally in eclipse IDE.

Yep, we use eclipse exclusively for all our cs sdk development and for the little perl customizations we may use.

We have many many extensions, as you call them, basically all of them designed to allow low-level users to do complex things without **** everything up. Some people would do this with workflows -- we've done it via the sdk. I even wrote our own little framework actually to make it easier on myself when implementing this stuff. This runs on TeamSite's implementation of Tomcat, by the way. It's not its own application like I think it sounds like you're doing. But the same principles apply.

I do all of this Java dev exclusively in Eclipse. In theory, you could manage all of your development within an Eclipse setup that uses a source code management tool, but that would take a little work to set up.

What I've done, and its only possible because I pretty much have a TeamSite dev server entirely to myself, is to use Eclipse and then set up a bunch of Ant build scripts to deploy out to that server to do testing. This, of course, would make source code management junkies freak out, but it's not like I don't have any other work to do to besides implementing code mgt for a TeamSite development server.

In terms of features, now and then I'll use the breakpoint debugging that you can set up between Eclipse and Tomcat and it comes in pretty handy. The number of cool and handy plugins available for Eclipse is great too.
