We are planing to install TS 6.5 with OD 6.x

We currently run OD 5.6 and DD 5.5.2. with TS 5.5.2.

I know about DD beinag a part of OD 6.x and that you have to enable it but where will DD home be? Where will database.xml be? Where can I get more information about DD? We own the DD product but other than enabling it do we have to download or request a special license key?

OD 6.0.1 is the latest release. If you upgrade after the end of this month, then you can go directly to OD 6.0.2.

DD is integrated in the OD base server. So its home is the OD home.

There's a DD manual that ships with OD 6.0.1. It includes a section on migration from DD 5.6. Please be sure to read that before proceeding with your upgrade, since it includes helpful tips.

Also note that in OD 6.0.1, there's a config file called iwsyncdb.cfg, which carried over from DD 5.6. In OD 6.0.2, this file goes away in favor of updates to odbase.xml. Just something to note if going from 6.0.1 to 6.0.2. (The OD 6.0.2 docs are updated accordingly.)

If doing DAS deployments, then no.
If doing DD command line deployments, then yes. You would go to the Interwoven support site and download DD 6.0.1 (or 6.0.2), which is actually an enabler tool. Running this tool on a host that has a base server installed will "turn on" your ability to run DD.
