Java vs Perl
PeteMan
Hey guys, I have a client whose implementation (customization) is mostly in perl, but they are getting some heat to move to java because the rest of the company is java.... Does anybody have any valid reasoning for doing things one way versus the other.... I am sure I am going to start a heated debate here, and I don't mean to, rather I would like some real experiences of problems and limitations of java and/or perl in teh TEAMSITE environment. Not a PERL vs JAVA debate. For instance, how is error trapping in the Java implementation? Is there a performance hit in using PERL? etc....
Any help would be great.

Being a consultant (at an hourly rate), I certainly enjoy being paid to
do things like this. But the point is why? If what you have works, why
spend lost of money to"fix" it ?
Also, depends on what you want to do, some stuff cannot be done
with java (like workflows), you can call java from perl, so you could
rewrite everything and put a wrapper were needed. Still why ?
If your developers are that bored.....

acttually - an interesting observation... During TS launch there were a lots of words about IWOV going completely Java and abandining perl even in workflows.. I was sceptical then, and I see I was right..
We are still with perl, and, I am not sure why anybody would be doing Java just for the sake of it...
If they want to go towards CS SDK.. then probably yes... but it does not seem to be the case...

Can anyone provide an example of Perl calling JAVA, for instance in an external task?
