I know that TS documentation states not to use software raid due to performance decrease.
But.
How many people run software raid 0/1/5 on the production servers?
Currently we have a software RAID1, w/o any performance issues. And the plan is to go for software RAID5 with additional drives.

We use 0+1 raid here, works well. IIRC (if I recall correctly - one of the Aussies did not know what that meant),
Raid 5 was the worst in terms of performance.

If you don't have any issues why are you planning to change the RAID configuration ?
I wouldn't want to use RAID 5, that too software - which is more CPU intensive.

Running out of space
It is a SunFire machine, which has only 2 internal HD's. We are getting some DAS, and the plan is to move backing store to the DAS unit.

We are using RAID 5 inside of our Network Appliance Filer SAN box and it is faster than local disk.
