Do you have more examples of strings? Greg's will work when the string is "templatedata/shared/awards/data/test" or anything else ending in "data/test" where you're looking for the 3rd element in the array split with "/". This just seems very specific and maybe that's okay for you situation.

I would try to key it off templatedata or data, not two directories, as test most likely won't be there. Lets say you have a variable with the dcr path called $dcrPath.

The following line will give you the data type based on it's location to templatedata&colon;
my ($dataType) = ($dcrPath =~ m|\btemplatedata/[^/]+/([^/]+)|);
The following line will give you the data type based on it's location to data&colon;
my ($dataType) = ($dcrPath =~ m|([^/]+)/data/|);
The following line will give you the data category and data type based on it's location to templatedata&colon;
my ($dataCategory, $dataType) = ($dcrPath =~ m|\btemplatedata/([^/]+)/([^/]+)|);
The following line will give you the data category and data type based on it's location to data&colon;
my ($dataCategory, $dataType) = ($dcrPath =~ m|([^/]+)/([^/]+)/data/|);
Just a few alternatives to consider. As always, there's more than one way to do it.

Try something like -

my $var ="templatedata/shared/awards/data/test";

## You might want to do some validation here. 
## e.g.   remove the begining / if present, 
##        convert \ to / if applicable, 
##        $var contains atleast one / , etc. 

my @junk = split("/", $var);

## Also you might want to check if the thrid element exists to avoid use of uninitialized variable kind of errors/warnings

my $third = $junk[2]; ## array index starts with 0.

Its amazing... i was not expecting so many replies.. but unfortunately it still not working... actually

$var =" templatedata\shared\awards\data\test" ; (notice that its backslash not forwardslash.. though in workflow the path of DCR attached contain forwardslash but when i try to retrieve the DCR path in my ipl i get dcrpath with backslash)

$var can
$var =" templatedata\shared\awards\data\test"

or

$var =" templatedata\shared\awards\data\dcr"

You cannot use single-back-slashes in double-quoted strings. I posted something on this not too long ago.
Either use single-forward-slashes. A retrieved path can easily be converted using something like: (my $var = get_path_function()) =~ tr|\\|/|;or use double-back-slashes: my $var =" templatedata\\shared\\awards\\data\\test";or use single-quotes (as long as you're not trying to interpolate variables within the string):
That being said, you can use the examples provided by either:

converting to forward-slashes first and then using the already-provided solutions, or
adapt the provided solutions to working with back-slashes

For example:
[gzevin]$var =~ m|[\\/].*?[\\/](\w*?)[\\/]data[\\/]test|;or [jbonifaci]my ($dataType) = ($dcrPath =~ m|\btemplatedata[\\/][^\\/]+[\\/]([^\\/]+)|);

my ($dataCategory, $dataType) = ($dcrPath =~ m|\btemplatedata[\\/]([^\\/]+)[\\/]([^\\/]+)|);

my ($dataCategory, $dataType) = ($dcrPath =~ m|([^\\/]+)[\\/]([^\\/]+)[\\/]data[\\/]|);or [iwovGraduate]:my @junk = split(/[\\\/]/, $var);
my $third = $junk[2]; ## array index starts with 0. but your code will be much easier to read if you convert the backslashes first (as shown above) and then use the examples provided.
