submit task apply metadata

Looking for a shortcut that may not exist.

I want to apply a piece of metadata right before the submit. This metadata will be the person who signed off on the approval... i.e. lastapprover. Now I want to apply this to all files in the workflow.

I realize I can do this with an external task etc... but is there an easy way to add something to a submit task that will apply this metadata?

I believe the only thing that remotely comes close to doing that (and not really) is by saving the comments on the submitted files. This is specified by the savecomments attribute, but I'm sure it doesn't really accomplish what you're looking to do. I'd say stick with the external task unless, somehow, the comments that existed on the file before the submittask are appropriate and sufficient for your needs. But, like I said, most likely it's not.

Thanks for the idea. I do like the idea of saving the coments but that will not get what I want... but thanks for the idea. I wanted to just throw it out and see if anyone had anything else. I'm going to start going with the external task.

how about using eastartop or eafinishop in the task definitions? I'm not entirely sure how you'd get the value for the EA you want to set - but if you can figure that part out - the operation should take care of setting the EA on all of the files associated with the task as you desire.

Alternatively - yes, an externaltassk to run iwextattr on each file will do the job. If you're setting multiple EAs on each file - and you're using 6.x -- you might want to look into use of the '-x' flag which allows you to pump an XML specification for all the EAs you want to set into iwextattr to do it all in one invokation [per file] rathern than N invokations per file...

I like the idea about the eastartop... I think if i set the value in my external task for notification to the reviewer who is the final approver... I could set a variable there, and then if it gets to the task I set the ea value based on that variable.

So I may try that...

I have it working now with the external task, the only problme in the person who shows up as having modified the file now is system... Is it possible to run an external task as a user? I haven't RTFM'ed yet on that one... so if it's in the manual please just tell me so ;-)

The eastart and op will work, but I will not be able to put them into the submit task. So I will need some extra tasks anyway. When you run them it changes the modified by to be whomever the owner of the submit task is.

So I will need extra tasks, but I will not need the external task.
