TeamSite Roles
skip11
Hi,
I have heard in the past from Interwoven Integrators that there are plans to introduce
more granularity in the role model employed by Teamsite, i.e.; more than the four existing
roles we see today. Can anyone tell me if this is true, and when it might show up ?
Thanks,

Custom roles have been a feature request since the 3.X days.
It's always been "planned" for consideration in the next major release.
Never made it.
Hopefully IW will pipe in, but don't hold your breath.

This capabilitly is on the list for 6.7. I am sure Sunil will chime in.
I can vouch for the fact that there are engineers working on this capability now.

Flexible Roles and Delegated Administration is the primary theme for TeamSite 6.7. You should be able to create custom roles and allow users to play more than one role. There will be no "logged in" role and depending on which branch you are working in, you assume the role that has been assigned to you in that branch.

This feature, implemented well, would save us a lot of custom workflow code. Hope it is released soon.

How will this change the method calls for CSSDK?
Please just make the call to get a CSClient object ignore the role. I would hate to have to change my code for your upgrade. Backwards compatibility would be very nice.

Hi Dan,
CSSDK will be backward compatible in the sense that it will still take in the role parameter in the current getClient method, but the behaviour will be changed so that the role parameter will be ignored. The plan is to deprecate this particular call in the future API.
I'd like to point out that even now, if you pass in a null role parameter, the best role for the user will be used. For example, if a user is both an editor and an author, if null role is passed, the role assumed for the user is editor. You may or may not have use cases where a user will have multiple roles, but in case you do not, you can future protect your code by passing in a null role.

We are still working out the schedules and so I don't have any exact timeframes. The current target is to release this in early Q1 2006.
It might be useful to start a thread to see how you plan to use flexible roles and delegated administration when it is available. That might give us more insight into your specific use-cases.
thanks
