Custom Metadata limitations

Is anyone aware of any practical limitations to the number of custom metadata tables that can be created.

We have a department that wants to have approximatly 50-80 custom metadata fields to the document object.

50 to 80 validated fields sounds a bit extreme. Although there are no theoretical limits, depending on how you customize the clients to display the data, you may have performance issues. I suggest you discuss this extension with support.
