Replicant Children Failure

We are trying to code some functions so they can ONLY run when there is at least one item in replicant. However, when we try to find out the number children in a replicant within a container using the following API: "IWDatacapture.getItem( "/small_banner/sm_banner" ).getChildren().length", it returns the correct value when there is at least one item, but the entire code breaks when there is none.

Is there any other way to find out the amount of children in a replicant (within a container) or at least to find out if there is 0 or null items in a replicant?
As I said, the goal is to avoid running certain functions when there is no item in a replicant.

We are running TeamSite 6.0

Have you tried alerting the following:

scalar(IWDatacapture.getItem( "/small_banner/sm_banner" ).getChildren()) ?

... and what do you mean that code "breaks"? What is the specific error?

There is no specific error. It just stops executing the rest of the statements in the code. I used several alerts after and before my previous statement, and it stops working when there is no children.

I know what you mean, I've had the same issue a few months ago, also. But, since getChildren() constructs an array and scalar() just provides the cardinal number of elements in an array, I think the code in my previous post might work for you. When the array is empty, it should display 0 (possibly -1, but I don't think scalar() ever returns -1).

If what's been proposed already doesn't work - try something like this:if ((IWDatacapture.getItem("/small_banner/sm_banner") != null) &&
(IWDatacapture.getItem("/small_banner/sm_banner").getChildren().length > 0)){
...
}I haven't tested this - but it looks like it should accomplish what you are talking about. Usually the FormAPI code stops getting processed as soon as an error occurs - which would likely be the case if the first part returns null and you were blindly trying to dereference it with getChildren().

?

Oh, great... now it looks like I'm raising an argument between

and



IWDatacapture.getItem("/small_banner/sm_banner").getChildren().length > 0

How does that make ME look, now???

The suggested code works only when there is a children. However, when there is no children, it stops executing the rest of the code. It just stops there without giving errors. Please let me know if you have any other suggestion.
A sample code is as follows:

if ((IWDatacapture.getItem("/small_banner").getChildren().length != null) && (IWDatacapture.getItem("/small_banner/").getChildren().length >= 1))
{
alert("Yes, it has children");
}
else
{
alert("No, it has no children");
}

I understand, but when you add getChildren() to getItem, the object is an array. When you add .length on to that, the value -- if it can be obtained -- is an integer. The value SHOULD be 0 (or -1, I keep forgetting) when the array is empty or non-existant, but if you were to use:



scalar(IWDatacapture.getItem("/small_banner/").getChildren()) > 0

as part of your IF statement like I mentioned way above, I'm fairly confident that it will work.

Hi,

I have also had this issue in a recent project where the replicant item was NOT placed within a <container>. I knew I had been able to get a replicant length in the past but I had always had the replicant item within a <container>. It was when the repliant was not in a container element that getting the replicant length failed.

In the below code /Media Files is the container and /Media File is the replicant.

var objMediaRep = IWDatacapture.getItem("/Media Files/Media File");
if(objMediaRep.getChildren() != null) {
var intMediaCount = objMediaRep.getChildren().length;
}

The key in this example is checking to see if the if condition returns an object before trying to get the children. Hope this helps
