In the WorkSite MP Web Client, are the tabs at the top if the screen used to designate projects or categories?

Projects.

You can switch between three different views of projects on a workspace by workspace basis. As I recall, tabs is the default.

Do you know what the others are. How are categories displayed.

Do you mean knowledge space categories? If so, they look essentially like folders, but are laid out a little differently than in collaborative workspaces. In SP1, you can also display them as a tree on the left hand side.
