Copy and Paste To Text Field?

If I copy a line of text from a Word Document, or from IE that has a ' in it... as in : It's bad. When I preview this I see: Itâ€™s bad

If I type in It's bad into the text box I see it's bad.

I checked and the data shows <value>Itâ€™s bad</value>

Any ideas? The encoding on the dcr is utf8...

This is a text box without any visual format, so it's kind of odd. Is there a solution to this?

I have tried this with and without

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd">
<html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" xml:lang="en" lang="en">

There is a way around it, but it will only work in IE since it involves accessing some Windows-specific functions with JavaScript. It is actually very simple. Just replace the 'paste' button with a custom command that does something like:
editor.pastText(window.clipboardDate.getData("text"));

Thank you, but if I replace the past button in the browser ( i assume that's what you are talking about) is that possible to do from the templating form? And if so would that change how things work if someone does a ctrl c and then a ctrl v? or a right click?

How are the characters actually being stored in TS's data directory? Are they XHTML? and if so I should be able to set the character encoding, but that's not working.

Any other ideas from anyone?

Ok, found the issue. They had an include that was telling it the meta char set to be: <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=iso-8859-1" />

So is it possible to let UTF 8 be what we store in the DCR, and then generate a page that's using ISO?

Are there any drawbacks to using iso-8859-1 as the default encoding for a dcr?

Actually, I completely misread your post. I saw the phrase Visual Formatter and missed the "without" part.

Anyway, yes you can set the encoding everywhere. Set it on the DCT and TPL to UTF-8 and see if that does the trick. I find that it is not perfect, but usually does the job. Trying to map windows-1252 characters to iso-8859-1 can be done, but it is a real headache and should be avoided if you can come up with something else that meets business needs.

I would suggest to verify if the options for "Smart Quotes" is set in MS Word or not. What behavior do you see if you unset the option for smart quotes in MS Word on client and then do the copy paste?
